The unbranded wagon sounds like it is a Newquida one, from China. The quality of these isn't as good as Piko or LGB, so the couplings may be at a different height.
You could put in a shim on the couplers, or fit slightly smaller wheels to compensate....

Yes, I have both LGB and PIKO and I can confirm that they couple together with no issues.
I 'double hook' all my rolling stock, i.e. every loop is fitted with a hook should the coupling not have one (LGB).
In the photo, the loco is a LGB V52, first wagon is a LGB Toytrain container flat, and the last 3 wagons are Piko....

Problem with Newquida is that the plastic is decidedly less strong than LGB or Piko, also these have quite long runs from bogie to coupling casing droop, thus unreliable coupling and uncoupling. The reason why I outed all my Newquida coaches bar 1 that hardly ever gets used.

It's the stacase of getting what you paid for. For someone who's starting out and wants to add to their stock quickly it's probably fine, and obviously easy to improve
