Help with light and sound options...

Right having done lots of listening I wonder if the V51/V52 is closest? All the others sound too powerful somehow, the 6 cylinder turbo unit has quite a lumpy idle, and a distinctive turbo whistle, but nothing is that close to my ear. The V51/V52 has the lumpiness, the 2095 is just too smooth, the V60 sounds similar but it doesn't accelerate in the same way and the V100 sounds too powerful.

What do others think?

Agreed James, I think of the available options the V51/52 is the way to go.

You might want to check Massoth's own site for the current full list of available sounds, I don't think the one mirrored on Dragon G's site is quite up to date.

James. the value for lighting - CV50 is not as straight forward as it may at first seem.
The CV is divided into 32 units. each unit in one 32nd of your track voltage.
So IF your voltage is 24, a value of 6 will give 4.5V.
24 divided by 32 times 6 = 4.5
Well - on the XLS anyway.

Hi everyone - I've pretty much decided to go for the XLS and the FRS7 Visaton speaker (thanks for the help Jon) as I've got the space...

Now where do people do they're shopping for this stuff?
I usually shop with Dragon G-scale but a quick look on Grootspoor shows that I can get both delivered for £165 which is quite a bit cheaper.
Is there anywhere in the UK that I can get these two items to keep my money in the UK? :D

The FRS7 isn't obvious from their site, it's code 35-2910 for the 4 ohm version and 35-2911 for the 8 ohm. If you have room consider the slightly larger FRS8, codes 35-2936 and 35-2937 for the 4 and 8 ohm versions respectively.
 
Buy the speaker FRS7 from Massoth, then it has de mini-CT stekker already clipped on the cable which you need to connect to the XLS! Artikelnummer: 8241070
Buying seperate mini-CT stekkers which come attachted to the cables makes it s more expensive and shippings costs etc.
 
Yes, I was going to say the same as Palmerston just did - you could get the FRS7 from somewhere like Rapid, and save a few quid on just the speaker, but then you're going to have to source the 2-pin plug for the Massoth speaker socket (unless you've already got a spare lying about), and to get that you need to buy a pack of assorted leads/plugs from Massoth which will cost you something like 18 quid.... all in all, much less hassle to buy the thing from Massoth in the first place with leads and plug attached. ;)

Thanks everyone for the advice.. you will have seen that I plumped for the XLS and Visaton FRS7 speaker from Mark (muns) (http://www.GardenRailOutlet.co.uk < Link To www.GardenRailOutlet.co.uk) - fantastic service and a competive with Europe price :)

However I now have some questions (below).
First the facts...
[*]Mark has set the light functions on the XLS to 5V(ish).[*]I have sourced some LEDs from Express Models with 1000ohm resistors for use with 12-16V.[*]The Massoth instructions show LEDs connected between the function output and the 'Ground' connection, whereas bulbs between the function and the +24V connection.
So the questions...
[*]Do I connect the LED between the function and Ground? which side does the resistor go?[*]What resistor value should I need? Can I use the 1000ohm ones or do I need a lower rating?[*]What is the best way to connect three LEDs to the same function? (for each end). I'm guessing in parallel? Does each need a resistor?
 
DCC "function common" is usually the positive side of the circuit, and each function "output" sinks current to ground. Odd that you say the instructions show things differently for buls and LEDs, I'd need to take a look at the instructions for my Massoth decoders when I get home (cannot @ work)

If it were me I'd leave the decoder function outputs at maximum voltage and use the resistors you got with the LEDs (that way, if you ever have to replace the decoder there's no risk of forgetting to lower the decoder outputs and blowing the LED or bulb).

If you're going to stick with 5v output from the decoder, then you need something more like 180-270 ohms depending on the LED vorward voltage drop and the current you want. I'd start with the higher value and see how it looks.

There are plenty of LED resistor calculators online, for example:

It doesn't matter which side of the LED circuit that you fit the resistor. By convention I usually put it on the positive side.

With multiple LED's you can connect in series with a single resistor (assuming the total number of LEDs doesn't result in more forward voltage drop than the supply). That calculator link above can do multiple series LEDs.
