Help required – sourcing train and tram?

Hi all, I'm new to the world of G Scale, and model railways in general. I'm working on a film shoot that will use G Scale models that will be adapted by a model maker.

I'm really hoping one of the forum members will be kind enough to help me?

I'm looking to buy a G Scale modern passenger train, and a modern tram. In an ideal world, I'd have loved something like:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_323

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urbos (specifically urbos 3)

However, it looks like there aren't many/any G Scale models that have been made of a British train like the BRClass 323.

So, I'm content to just source something similar ish, that looks like a modern passenger train, and can be painted in my client's livery.

The tram is another tricky one, again I'm happy to find ANY modern tram, but haven't found anything outside N or H scale?

I'll be extremely grateful if anyone can let me know what my best options/contenders are?

Many thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave, and welcome.

At the risk of complicating the issue I suggest expanding your search to include the Gauge1 and Gauge 3 fraternities.

The former model British stuff to a slightly smaller scale than the nominal G scale but use the same track gauge and the latter use the same nominal scale as G with a wider gauge of track.

GRS of Princes Risborough ( http://www.grsuk.com/index.asp?info/welcome.htm ) supply Gauge 1, G, and Gauge 3 so a chat with them may be fruitful.

The only modern looking units that are ready to run are the LGB Allegra which is a bit pricy to repaint unless you're wealthy ;)

Or the LGB ICE train,

Or this earlier version which appears on eBay

The other option would be something like repainting a loco to look like a unit, the LGB P40

or the Piko Taurus might be possibilities.

LGB used to do a RhB driving trailer that if you could find a couple and rig up a motor bogie are another option, again eBay is the option to find them.

Something on the low cost side which might do at a push could be this:

you don't have to use the Playmobil figures or this:

The first has working lights, the second, older, version hasn't.

There's also a central carriage available.

Somewhere there are photos of a custom of this which I will try and find.

There are two examples of Playmobil customs here:

Interesting stuff Gordon. I recently acquired one of the RCE sets with a view to making something similar to the Dublin LUAS trams. Apart from lacking decent painting skills, I reckon it will not be too hard a job.

iI look forward to seeing the end result, Mick. The modern R/C set is a favourite of mine and the first one I bought. I've two now, plus one centre carriage, but this is horrendously heavy and slows down the train noticeably (and takes a big toll on the batteries). I've toyed with the idea of a tram type layout based on the 4011 and 4018 sets as the Seaport and Beachtown Coastal Tramway.

Edit: If you do a bit of coupling swapping by using the bogies from the Playmobil 4010 "electric brick" set (you can buy spare bogies from Playmobil Direct service), you make up a four car train, although you also have to make sure that both motors use the same wavelength on the R/C. However, this again is easy enough as you can buy spare crystals in sets of TX and RX from Playmobil (or swap in crystals from other similar R/C sets).
