Hi everyone, new guy from Penrith NSW, retired Plumber, wasn't really looking for a new hobby, till I found Garden Railways and I was hooked
I started of doing a scratch build G scale 040 Decauville live steam locomotive and was looking for some guidance and joined a Garden Railway club
here. Trouble was they were mostly live track modelers, so when finished my loco I couldn't join in the fun on the monthly meets, so I like a lot of hobby people do, I started another build
this time a battery 040 Hudswell shunter. I started to think about a garden set up, but our Staffy pup has other ideas so I have started to build a temporary track in the safety of our unused pool area
till she gets a bit more sensible :D.... I have also built 2 brake vans to drag around. Thanks for having me aboard !

Welcome Alan! Plenty of advice on here, also plenty of dodgy humour though. Pictures would be good too!
If you've scratch built a live steam loco, you've obviously got a lot of modelling skills. For live steam have a look at the 16mm Association at 16mm.org.uk. There are a couple of Australian groups around.

Hi Alan I am only new here too, I used to live at cambridge park many years ago. I know your pain with the doggy, we have our yard split up into sections so our doggy doesn't wreck everything. He doesn't mean too , but if its between him and his mission it doesn't exist. Look forwad to seeing pictures of your work.

Welcome aboard Alan.

Welcome to the madness Alan....

Welcome from Bundaberg Qld, lived on the South Coast (Nowra) for a few years where I caught the bug.
When I built my new layout I made it elevated mostly to be easy on the back as the years advance; might be a solution for the doggy problem.
How I did it;

Thank you GAP, know Nowra well, my layout is/will be elevated but doggy thinks she is a Rock Wallaby

Thanks Stewie, yeah Cambo isn't far from me. I am putting my track in the pool area out of harms way, we have corrugated raised veggie beds, but she thinks it's just a place to dig with a view . will post some pic's.

Thank you Paul, I haven't finished the live steam loco just yet, moved on to the battery shunter so I have something to run at our clubs meets.

Hi Alan,
Welcome to the fraternity, as you will be aware it is populated by a most 'interesting' collection of people.:)
I live a bit west of you but when I can I run my G1 [and 5"g] locos at Hornsby Model Engineer's site in Mid Dural Road, Galston. [HME - Galston Valley Railway]
This is an oldish picture of the G1 track; steps over the track are being constructed at the far end where there are also steaming bays.

Running is all 'dead rail' at the moment but moves are afoot to 'electrify' the two inner ovals leaving the two outside ones for live steam.
We are having our October Birthday Weekend celebration very soon, you may like to drop out and see us on the Sunday.
Cheers
Ian

Thank you Ian, funny enough I was invited out to The Galston Valley railway by a fellow member of the Garden club I have joined, sadly I wasn't able to make it
that particular Sunday, but will try my best to be there for the 13th.

Alan,
If you can sneak out on the Saturday you will get in free and meet some of the members milling around, you probably won't be asked but if you are tell them an ex secretary invited you and mention the club you are a member of. I may not be there but PM me if you like for more details.
Parking along Mid Dural Road can be ''interesting" but wonder in and have a look.
cheers,
Ian

Ex secretary aye lol, I think the guy I was talking to was a committee member, never caught his name and the bugger wasn't wearing his name tag.
I might give it a go, put some black ash on my hands and face and fit right in.

Hi Alan,
I did a bit over 10 years and escaped reasonably sane. Feel sorry for my successor but he is a strong bloke .....
I think the gent you met was Guy, a Board member and our G1 representative. We have a bad habit re name tags, must see if I can find mine. :(
Go easy on the black ash as you may be mistaken for one of our 5"G steam drivers and be ''volunteered'' for some unpleasant job.
The club is also having a G1 get-together on Saturday the 2nd November so I am told, Garden Railway of Australia members along with lots of others are invited, not sure of specific details yet as we are running around like headless chooks at the moment getting ready for the birthday weekend....
The new steps over the G1 track as of today are useable.... see below...
cheers
