Hello and good morning from Metairie Louisiana, I'm just getting into the large scale hobby as I happened onto a bunch of trains over the holidays. I had an HO layout and a Lionel layout when I was much younger but I am looking forward to setting up a garden railway. I have a new LGB work train, and a very old LGB passenger train with a few random cars. I also have a Lionel large scale Christmas train that uses the G scale tracks. I acquired about 100 feet of LGB used track which I've cleaned up and I am in the beginning stages of figuring out how I want to set up a layout in my yard. I am excited about this as I have wanted a layout for so long but with children and other things I've never had space to do it in the house.

Very good point, my primary area I was considering isn't actually close to somewhere where the trains could go inside so I was considering building basically a miniature garage for the trains to park in. Fortunately everything is safe indoors at the moment. I am astounded by how strong this little LGB engine is, I can hook every single piece of rolling stock I have together and it gets it moving just as easily if it was running by itself.

Welcome. My wife spent a large part of her life in NOLA and was based there for part of her time as a DL Flight Attendant. We have family who live and work in the Crescent City and others who are up in New Iberia. We were down in NOLA between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess that you’ll be tackling the same issues with humidity and wind events that I did when we lived down the coast near Destin.

Lots of info here, much based in the UK, although there are a spread of us across the US.

You’ll hear about humor. Yes it’s here, again mostly UK based, and many of us think we’re funnier than we actually are ;-)

Post lots of photos, and ask many questions. You’ll get many different answers and all will be correct!

Welcome to the Forum! Your LGB stock is a good start, and 100ft of track should give you a long run: all of us on here believe gardens look better with a train running through them! Get something running outdoors, as that will give your enthusiasm a boost.

Welcome Metrosclair. My answer to indoor storage. Knock a hole in the wall to the living room from the garden outside. Garden and railroad level sits 30" higher than the floor of my living room, same height as the back of the sofa, handy I expect there may be serious repercussions if a partner, where present, is not consulted with prior to works. Dust free storage near at hand, allow for future expansion here. Max.

Stock mostly Fn3/1:20.3 scale US 3ft gauge logging & D&RGW. Accucraft and Bachmann. Track LGB.


Storage for locos, right by the end wall and sidings. Sell it as a "conversation piece" to those responsible for planning permission

(Well, OK, my wife says "absolute (something else)" but I choose not to believe her .

Yes I'm considering just setting up a small loop in the backyard to get it rolling. I guess I need to start doing some research on road bed and mounting. It seems like maybe some sort of elevated thing along the fence might be a good option for me.

A raised trackbed is easier on the knees and back for persons of advanced age such as me. “On the ground” can meld into the landscape better; a raised bed or beds can give you both comfort and style if you have the dosh.
