Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Well here's an idea I've had, using one of those bakers' bread delivery trays. I found one in our crewroom at work recently.

The idea is to recreate the metal lattice effect....

You could do both Gizzy
but i think as its a "yard" im not sure the railway would have gone to the expence of giving their workers a posh bridge
i just think it would give a sence of antisipation if the viewer couldnt see what was going to happen next until something appeared out of either tunnel

Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Well this is what I've decided to do in the end.
Although I liked the idea of Tony's tunnel mouths, I then thought maybe a 3 arched viaduct, with tracks coming from under two of the arches would look good.

So I then drew this up on a large scrap of 3mm plasticard, but drawing curves, plus the thought of then having to cut the tunnels accurately from this thick material (I don't have a bandsaw) led me to thinking it would have to be an all straight line cut job (score and snap).

So I roughed up this design in MS Paint and I seem to have gone back to the idea of the riveted steel plate bridge as before, but a longer version, supported on brick pillars to give 3 'voids' (can't really be called arches) underneath. Tracks thus run through 2 of the voids, with the other being 'abandoned' (and possibly bricked up).

To 'tie in' the bridge to the low tree line on the backscene, the brick work will be 'dropped' to try to give the effect of the bridge deck changing to a slope....

Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Well having spoken to my friend Phil over the weekend, I've decided to go for something with curves after all, and try and recreate a bridge with 3 arches.

The inspiration is the one at Weybourne on the NNR....

Making it out of plasticard may make it easy for you if you dont have the tools to make it from wood Giz

The main reasons for using the 3mm plasticard Steve, are;

1) It's light, bearing in mind this is a portable layout (wood would be too heavy),

and

2) I've been given loads of the stuff for free....

Gizzy, i urge you to reconsider!

there are better light weight options than plasticard.

look here: ????http://kormsen.ko.funpic.de/forum/viewtopic.php?t=426

Korm i was going to say use polystyren you have done a brillent job on yours because doing straight brickwork is very differcult.
Gizzy its easyer if you do uneven stone and you need to make up a light dimmer switch on a extension lead so you can adjust the voltage to your soldering iron so its not to hot.
As i said before i have a ton of sceanic materials i can donate when i see you.
In the meantime check out these buildings and how he makes them watch the whole video its fantastic railway but the building with polystyren is at 10.50

not, if you use a metalic curtain rail as ruler.

...you need to make up a light dimmer switch on a extension lead so you can adjust the voltage to your soldering iron so its not to hot.
or you just use one of these little transformers, that plug into 230V and give you 110V.

Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Korm/Tony, I'm going to use brick paper from Jackson's Minitures on the bridge so as to match the station building.

The scenic break is going to be quite 'thin', hence the use of the plasticard medium....

Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Right, having gone through various ideas, this is what I'm actually going to do!

I have cut the 3mm plasticard to approx size and cut out the 3 arches.

Just got to take it to the Model Club later in the week and see how it fits....

An evening's work at the MRC, and I cut the plasticard for the viaduct.

The brick paper has been ordered from Steve Jackson, ready for next weeks MRC night....

More work done on Hardyard.

Last night it was adapted to run under MTS control.
The station Building was refitted in a slightly different place.
The brick paper was pasted to the arches.
The 'display track' in front of the fiddle yard was refitted having been shortened slightly to fit.

And today, I've been asked to exhibit Hardyard at the Brandon Garden Railway Show on 13 Aug 11.

It will also be exhibited at the Bury St Edmunds Show on 21 May 11....

Re:project for a Rainy Day - A G Scale Diorama

Well it's just over a month before its first outing, but Hardyard is nearly ready.

I had to re-ballast a section that I did with 'Brush it On', as this shrank and cracked. So I mixed up some Peco ballast and Cascamite glue, spread this over the old ballast and into the cracks, before squirting with a garden spray bottle with water and a little washing up liquid. If this works, I'll 'top up' the rest of the track this way

The wire mesh fence was 'erected' around the yard, although I've yet to put the posts in place! I forgot to take the hardstanding with me to the MRC so this also needs plonking in place.

But it's 90% there now....

Looking really good, Gizzy. I like the end board with the fence, buffers and trees.

So, you're now on the exhibition circuit, are you? Fame at last!

Hardyard is now finished!

Quite pleased with the result, and I'm ready for the Exhibition in 2 weeks time.
(Next week is our clubs AGM and 'last orders' from the Exhibition Manager so they'll be no work done, and the following week I'll be taking the layout down, loading into the trailer, and then setting it up at the Exhibition venue.)
Considering I've only been able to work on it for 2 out of every 3 Thursdays, since the beginning of the year, I reckon I've done well!

f81e6c41370f42c4ad3771bb4c736bf1.jpg

As well as the refurbishment of the scenic details, I have also converted the layout for MTS running, so quite a lot of work done.

Enjoy the photos, and if you are free on the 21 May 11, and want to visit our Exhibition near Bury St Edmunds, then the details can be found here....
