H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Hannah wasn't felling the best today so to help cheer her up we ran her IP Engineering railcar. More set and forget pleasure.

It paused at Church Rd level crossing for a photo stop it seems. ???

So it would be rude not to take several pictures :D

And one coming out of Sawmill Tunnel to end the day. :)

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Nice John. Given that it's throwing it down here in NW Florida, your photos have cheered us up!

Thanks for sharing what looks like a great day.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Magic. Pure magic. Love the little ones in the SUNSHINE! ???

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Back from a week away and after catching up with a few jobs (and more to do) it was time for the Dubs A to check out all was in order.
Okay at the log loading siding

Okay coming off Nina's Trestle and passing the Bridge Gangers Hut.

Though I feel much more testing is needed to confirm all is in order ;)

Excellent John.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Lovely pictures, nice to see the finished timber being taken to town too, is the wooden framework surrounding the timber load a New Zealand practice ? Here I have only seen the cut wood stacked in the wagon as held together by so sort of strapping or rope ???

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

:o..... and a few hours later, we got a massive tropical downpour. Any washouts ?

Hi Garry, yes I've copied "typical" ways of carting timber here, well back in the days when 4 wheel wagons ruled the railway.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Today it was Manawanui's day to steam in the sun....
IMG_0929.JPG

...not that you can see the steam in the photos but it was there in real time ;)

A pleasant way to spend an hour.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Didn't realise you could grow lemons in NZ?

Great pix as always JR....

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Yep, and oranges and here up North we even grow bananas.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

John,
Superb Bush Railway look and feel to your line. How do you keep all that vibrant growth in check to be able to keep the Railway up and running? I have visited relations in Auckland and went down to Waitra? as well. Here there were Grapefruits growing in the Garden. What a treat to be able to pick one for Breakfast.

Looks good John. Love those little fern looking plants.

Re those mini ferns. They are available in UK, grow in full sun but happier in slightly dappled shade. Wish I could remember the name, but you do see them in the Alpine Section of Garden Centre's.

Just been Googleing and found this:-

Leptinella 'Platts Black’
NZ Native - very low carpeting perennial. Good groundcover for wet sites with good drainage. Grows in sun or light shade. Button flowerheads.

Leptinella serrulata
NZ Native - low-growing groundcover. Green and burgundy fern-like foliage slightly more vigorous than 'Platt's Black'.

Both of these fit the bill. Just be careful if ordering by post as there apear to be other 'Platts Black’ named plants out there.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Hehe, glad you came up with the name for the Fern Jon, I'd forgotten the name! It glrows relatively slow for me in the dappled shade and our heavy clay soils, it will grow faster in more favourable conditions.
As for the rest of the growth it's not really that vibrant, it's taken some 7 years and a number of plant failures to get to this stage with the mature canopy much older. Again with the heavy clay soils with semi to heavy shade plant selection is limited. There are a number of "wild" hebes and several almost weed trees that seed well in the bark mulch. I progressively thin them and they give the background greenery, nature of course making a better selection of the plants that will grown than me. If I let these "weed trees" get to big they would take over the area!

The lemons are tasty Gizzy, nice on lettuce - what you say. Yep fresh steam oil lemons squeezed over lettuce salad, yum ;D

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Great shots John. I can feel the warmth. I love those Ferns, I have the Plattes Black on my line. It took about a year but now they are spreading all over. Never got the flowers butcould be that they are in the shade mostly. They eve survive our winters.

Re: H&MGR, a family railway in NZ

Been a week or so of patchy weather, hard to think we were having summer at times. But this afternoon both an hours free time and warm sunshine aligned.
So what better to do than steam the lemons again ;D
