Hi to everyone,

I have just joined. I am living in the Philippines. This is my first garden railway. Currently, I have a simple end-to-end setup. However I am considering adding an elevated section. Very little product available here so my scenery is based upon natural stone, cacti and lollyice-stick houses!!
One of the difficulties in setting up here is the restriction on the use of wood. This is due to the termites which would chomp through wood pretty quickly. Instead, I have constructed raised track-beds made from scrap metal and supported upon vertical, drain pipes.
So far the heat and strong direct sunlight has not had any noticeable effect upon my LGB track which is mostly second hand.
Am I the only person in the Philippines with a garden railway?
Tim

Welcome Tim. Strong direct sunlight. We can only dream. Interesting about the termites, do they even attack hardwood? I'm surprised our Australian colleagues have not mentioned that, maybe it's not such a problem there. We like pictures here, no matter how simple your layout is. Just take a digital picture, copy it to your PC, click the "Upload a File" button, and you're done. Have fun.

Welcome Tim. Interesting to learn of solutions to problems that those of us in other parts of the world would probably never think of. Look forward to seeing pic's of your enterprise.

Great layout Tim. Nice to see that it is viewable form inside the house too!
Also a good use of non-termite friendly materials.

Hi Tim
Nice looking layout.
What is its height above the ground?
My experience in Aust of full sunlight is that the bits of LGB track I have stand up well to the UV I found that using slide on joiners in various spots allowed for expansion and contraction. Conductivity is not a problem for me as I run battery powered locos but a simple jumper wire across the join will reduce any problem.
I sometimes use a protectant known as "Armourall" that is used to protect plastic on dash boards in cars its a bit like sunscreen for plastic.

Termites (aka white ants in Aust) are a big problem down under, houses have been condemned after an infestation.
The use of steel frames for houses is becoming more common along with termite barrier meshes and treatments before a concrete slab is laid for a new house.
In the garden the use of treated timber is common place with different ratings depending if the timber is going into the ground or not. And yes the do attack hardwood.
