Its free if you have a printer just need the belts motor etc so should be relatively cheap.

I appreciate that, but I don't own a 3D printer, and don't plan on buying one!!

It is doable with some forethought and planning plus a good deal of research.

Although the designers figure of $60 (£45) to complete, should be taken with a large dose of salt.

I have something along these lines in design phase - not this exactly, but similar concept. I probably will get it finished this summer and then share the drawings and parts list. So far it is about £50 in parts from aliexpress - the brushes and LiFePo batteries are are most expensive bit so far. but generally same concept - belt drive + brushes on top of a platform.
