Expand the "What's New"

Hi Administrators

I'd like to make a suggestion concerning the threads that come up under the "What's New" topic. I realize the number of posts seem to be going up - congratulations on running a successful forum that I think all of us enjoy. I also understand that coding makes it easy to limit that number of threads that show up under "What's New" when the topic is selected. However, I find it awkward having to keep going back to the "View More..." button.

Could you instead list all the threads that have a post added in the last 24 hours on the opening page of "What's New"? I think the coding for this should not be too difficult. Thanks for your consideration.

I find clicking on the New Posts bit brings up all the latest and new posts. In fact that and the alerts button are the only ones I really use
 
The way it is at the moment, it allows you to miss a day, but not miss any posts.

I can see the argument both ways, but if it was only new posts in the last 24 hrs, we're going down the FB route - and that's a b****y nightmare. If you don't respond to something now it's lost forever :mask: :mask: :mask:
 
Thanks Paul, i had not used "New posts" before. Rhino, I was referring to the "What's New" major heading, not the "New posts" button. It appears the "New posts" is tailored to each individual member. I think the "What's New" just opens up with the 10 threads that have the most recent posts to the site. 24 hours was just an arbitrary number to keep number of threads initially presented from being overwhelming much as current 10 seems to be. I'd actually be more in favor of 2 days or even three. I'm not at all suggesting the "view more..." be eliminated.

It seems many of us missed new member Mitch's Cockatoo Creek Tramway post. It was my speculation that it may be because the thread quickly dropped out of the "What's New" top 10.

Oh, I didn't realise it was just the top 10 - tricky one. I rely on What's New quite a bit - I referred to new posts as a generic term , not knowing that there was that option.

Now I'm even more confused :confused::confused::confused:

I think it comes from being old :smoke::smoke:
 
I use 'New Posts'.. I think I had missed the original post, as the thread appears to have been created in the 'Media' section??

I currently have an orange box '50' next to 'Media'.. Having looked a couple of times, it seemed to be pictures I had seen in other threads, so I ignore it..
You can miss a few days, and 'New Posts' seems to have all the content you would expect?

I agree, this is how I view the forum as well, Mitch's post is the only one I have missed, and it seems everybody missed it, which indicates a system glitch.

Phil, as you point out Media is for photos etc, but one added to the media section, so if I add a photo direct to a post it does not appear in media, however if I upload photos to my gallery to be added to a post it goes into media. David's pic of the day always goes through media.
 
I think the "View More" is there if you want similar titled (or similar content) threads. The "What's New" works fine for me - it allows me to catch up (even after a day's absence). As all the titles are arranged by time of posting, it's easy to pick threads that are of the most interest to me. I even read threads that are beyond my ken - whilst muttering to myself "Thank heaven I'm all analogue :D

In actual fact I make two separate posts. I first post a pic in the daily Coffee Lounge topic, I then post separately into the appropriate album in Media. As an aside I also keep a copy of the Pic of the Day in a computer file to look back through to help me avoid duplicates.

David, many thanks, I knew you coffee lounge photos were from loaded your gallery, didn't realise you loaded into the the gallery after putting in the coffee lounge :)
 
I have 2 computers that I use to view the forum one running WIN10 and one running Linux.
When I look at the "What's New" tab I see more posts per page on my Linux machine than the WIN10 machine (Firefox vs WIN Edge maybe??).
While writing this (WIN10) there are 6 ads displayed, one of them duplicated, that occupy approx. the same screen space as a post with a quote.
As the ads help pay for the site I guess its something that we must endured to have the site.
I do not know if there is a subscription option that allows the user to not see ads like some other forums but that may be an option worth exploring.
 
Yes there is a subscription option to avoid ads, it's £15 a year if memory serves me well. You get to it via your Account page then Account Upgrades.
 
The problem with only 10 "new posts" is that if you've been away you miss a lot of action! And then listing the threads that have not been updated since your last visit seems a bit futile, even ridiculous.

We had a similar complaint some years ago on Largescalecentral.com here in the states. The solution turned out to be setting the "new posts" to more than 10 - I don't recall the details but now the new posts page has many threads that have been updated; whether you visited them or not.
 
Those that are "not updated" since the last visit are still unread files. I cannot see what the problem is.

Mick, they are not "updated since my last visit" and therefore there is nothing new in them that I haven't seen. See my answer to Jimmy below to view the problem.

Jimmy, that does not seem to be the case. You only get to see 10 threads with new posts - after those 10 you get "Threads below have not been updated since your last visit. " If there's nothing new in them you don't need to view the latter. But there may be 25 new posts in threads that have been updated and which did not make the list of the "top 10". Try clicking and count how many new posts you see.

Well I think it means (to me at least) that those posts that you didn't have time to read haven't been added to - still the same as your last visit when you didn't read them. Am I right?
