While educating myself about the DCC CAN Bus and what I should be doing with my railway setup I came upon the following Youtube video about the topic.
Ok it's as applied to the motor industry, but it really helped me understand the how and why and how you can test things.

Have you heard of MERG they have a system called CBUS that uses CANBUS.
I joined and found their resources (kits) and help were excellent.
While mainly focused on smaller scales the principles remain the same for G scale.

Their quarterly journal has heaps of good articles plus access to the user groups can be real beneficial.
