Seeing a decent British outline coach, reasonably cheap, I got hold of three, only to find that they were very unhappy with R1 curves. They were stiff to pull, and and derailed readily. The centre wheels just got in the way. I modified one by unscrewing the baseplate, removing and discarding the centre axle and bearings, moving the outer bearings inwards, so that the wheelbase became six and a half inches instead of just under nine. The existing self-tappers were reused to rescrew the bearings to the coach floor. This also had the useful effect of lowering the chassis by about five sixteenths. I cut suitable apertures in the baseplate to clear the wheels, and made the height correction to the couplings, fitting Bachmann knuckle couplers at the same time. Happy with this, I modified the other two. They now run easily round R1, and I do not think that the 4 wheel configuration looks out of place.

Good idea!

Although Annie and Clarabel are already 4 wheelers, and are basically a similar body, you'd have to saw off the face and repaint to match your Bachman Lyn....

Fairlie, old chap,

Would you mind running a rule over the base of the coach?
I'd like to know length & width.
Thanks.

Hi Rob. Length (not including buffers or couplings) 13in.
Length (including knuckle couplers) 15.5 in.
Width 4in.
Height (as modified) 5.75 in.
Original wheelbase 8.75 in
Modified wheelbase 6.5 in.
All the best,
Malcolm.
