Easy Sound upgrade on LGB MTS fitted locos

P&S Hobbies' current website price for an "S" module is £120, so not sure where the "under £100" comes from? But I agree that you can get them cheaper from German suppliers, around £90 in my experience.
Very good little units, easy to fit and highly recommended if you don't want to rip out an existing driving chip.

Spot on Chas, he installs and for free, he put an Massoth LS chip in an old,LGB, 3 wire ,U Class. Built a new wire loom, installed the whole thing. I had a problem with it, so he put a competely new chip in it, ran it all week to make sure it was perfect, then phoned me to tell me it was ready.
For me the service is unbeatable and yes I know I could save money buying from the Geremans, but I dont want to, and if I did, I cannot be doing with getting involved in all that wiring stuff, gets in the way of running things. I am not good at the tecchie stuff, the clock in my car is right 6 months a year.
 
Chris: I have just completed installing a Massoth S decoder is an LGB 22711 factory equipped with an onboard decoder. Very simple and quick installation (connected 2 wires to the decoder, and fitted a speaker). works on analog and digital layouts, extremely satisfied with results, including the simulated chuffs. Highly recommend it.
 
I'd like to say thanks for all the very helpful replies - i have learned much. P&S Hobbies sold me my Digital Starter set in the Spring and checked it all worked before shipping, and I have bought a second hand digital loco, and a new wagon off him as well, and received good service. I've been looking at what manuals I can download off the web and so far it seems to be:
a) The Massoth S would seem to fit quite readily with the LGB chipped stuff. I would need to buy loudspeaker seperately, and not sure about any further cables, so I can understand the price comparison with taking out what is there and fitting the XLS.
b) The Massoth XLS would seem to be a good choice for the LGB "DCC ready" (but unchipped) stuff that I have - essentially LGB Stainz from the starter set marked DCC ready.
I was looking to get away from the LGB sound modules if i could - because they are generic rather than engine specific - whereas the Massoth stuff is available for some specific engines.

Chris, just to clarify, the XLS chip is for locos with 2 motors. Your Stainz can be fitted with the Massoth LS chip, as it has a single motor.

Also, Massoth supply suitable speakers for their chips. Here's a link to Dragon G Scale's site, who are very helpful IMHO, but of course, you can shop around for the deal that suits you....

For LGB chipped locos, you only need the speaker, the wires that connect the S to the onboard decoder are factory soldered on to the S with the proper termination.
When choosing between the LS and the XLS, you should consider the cost and ease of installation in addition to what Gizzy brought up above ( one vs 2 motors). For a decoder ready Stainz, you may have to discard the original PCB to fit either the LS or XLS in the boiler. Not so for an L decoder.
When I chipped the Stainz, I installed an L decoder in the boiler by attaching it to the PCB. I then placed a super flat speaker in the speaker enclosure below the roof of cab, covered the speaker with a thin sheet of palsic and laid an S decoder on top of that sheet of plastic. Every thing fit neatly under the roof, no rattle from the speaker, just nice sound. Slightly more expensive that an LS or XLS, but no surgery to the LGB original wiring or electronics.

Since an L decoder has a SUSI interface, you could have used a SUSI only sound module at a considerable saving to the Massoth S, Mohammed. Did you use the SUSI for the Massoth S?

I have considered using a suitable HO/OO sound module for single motor LGB locos. Never done it yet, but in theory it should work. Something like the Uhlenbrock 363xx should do. These can be loaded with Dietz sounds.

Beavercreek Mike on here is going to have a go at using the Digitrax Soundbug to add sound to locos that have a driving decoder with no SUSI interface.

The Massoth S and LS are currently not available (except at a premium price) while Massoth complete a rework of these boards.
