1977-82 Dark brown cab, as above but with rear lighting sockets, usally fitted with clear front lens, and red rear lens, but this is not deffinitive, some versions have gold hand wheels, some have black, There are some light brown cabs from same period and oddly some 2020's with the 2774 works numbers but with No1 Cabs.
1983-86 as above but with Letzte HU 26.6.79 on front buffer beam, locos of this date usally have brass handwheels, Known examples in Dark Brown and Green

1979 -1982 Saw the change to the Now standard Green Cab of a No2,

2040

1968-1970 Black Loco, No gold leaf, basic Boiler detail, Straight Stack, However it's Know some versions were made with the baldwin stack, No 4 on Cab, sometimes one turns up with goldleaf on numbers, Small headlights, Round vent and larger whistle, sometimes has bezel on front lamp
1971 -1974 as above but on Split chassis with skates
1975 As above but with greater Boiler detail, cab detail, later cab vent, small whistle, later large lights, versions exist with either lens or without. Usally no Cab sockets, But I have seen one with

From time to time various coloured No4 cabs turned up in factory specials, The number 4 Cab moulding was often used for the Xmas Locos

There are Locos that dont Match any of these notes, Slight changes to roof design in later models, The very last Stainz with metal rods the 2120D used the Later No2 Cab Mouldings but on a Sandwitch box.

Factory specials or Sets Often Had Locos in Non standard Colours, But by looking at the general design of the loco a Date can usally be found. Some sets are Listed in Greenburgs, Some Basic Sets had locos missing lights or sockets, Common one of these is the Primus range, made for the German chain of shops.

Phew....it's just gone Valentine's day....and I thought that this was some weird way of expressing things!!!

But no, a proper piece of work.

I too have various hybrid Stainz's...made up from parts. What looks like should fit together..sometimes doesn't!

Yes you have a late cab with the extra pip mouldings on roof, later lighting sockets, it has the works plate of a 2020, and the cab of a 2020, but a factory fitted 2010 chassis with working smoke stack, which would date it to 1985 at the earliest , It's pre 1990 as has split or clamshell mech.

The one on the right here is the first brown (very dark) cab I have seen..
What shade is the light brown one?

This is a great repository of information, I really knew nothing off LGB engines, I had heard about their bullet proof construction and the quality that goes along with the name but other then that I new nothing.

I am currently trying to acquire a L.G.B. 92177 "Helena" 0-4-0 "Iron Mountain Co"

again knowing nothing of it.

my 2010D however has done nothing but impressed me, I plan to sit down and give it a nice little detail in the next little while.

I do have a question however, if the smoke element is bad in this engine how hard is it to replace?

5 mins you just unscrew it, and replace whole stack, unlike the newer ones you replace the element, Uk cost about £20

Sparky keeps beating me to it!!!

Regarding 'light brown..

Hmmmm...
I know I have difficulties distinguishing between shades (made some chemistry lessons a bit of a guess), but that does not look 'brown' to me at all??
Looks more ?orange? - Have to wait until I see one in the flesh, probably..

Thanks anyway.
;D ;D

Regarding smoke unit..

Dead easy, either pull old unit out top of stack (carefully) with thin pliers. Cut wires and solder in new. DO NOT let the wires fall down the chimney!
You can drop the block off the bottom, and make the conections.. You will need to do tis if the wires have fallen down the stack. - Do not ask how I know! ::)

Else if an older loco, unscrew the chimney off the nut underneath. - Watch for the nut falling out of the bottom of the loco, and screw in a replacement.

Yes photo does make it orangy but it is light brown

Won this one on Ebay, I really gotta stop going on Ebay . . .

Any info on it? looked real pretty and in good shape.

Nice little engine. Its slightly smaller than the Stainz. The same Chassis is used on the Otto which is a fairly common European based loco. Should do you well.
