I'm thinking of repainting my green Jackson Sharp EBT coaches to go with my new DRG loco. The appropriate colour would appear to be a brownish shade of red; anyone know what the nearest readily-available match might be? I'm likely to go for of Halfords rattle cans at this stage.
 
Red plastic primer shot over with a satin coat of some kind, looking at my AMS RGS cars. Alternately dark olive green - Testors pullman green is nearest. Can be found on Ebay from US suppliers, only 1oz tin at a time due to postage regs (got some about a year ago that way).

On one occasion a forum member posted a list of Halfords rattle can colours which corresponded to colours use by various railway companies ( I don't know if the D&RG was one of them) but I cannot find it now for love nor money . If the member who posted it could be so kind as to do so again?
 
When I wanted the matching paint to change my Yellow/black/silver LGB Rio Grande cars to the Pullman green, I knew about the Testors Pullman green but wanted to find a source over here. No joy for finding the Testors in UK but I researched all of the makes and colours available to us.
Tamiya AS24 spray is practically an identical match and readily available at a cheaper price than importing the testors suff. I compared the finished effect with an item sprayed in Testors Pullman green (that I had got from the states) and it really was incredibly hard to tell.

As for the RGS red the real colour is Tuscan Red Which is not far off Plasticote red oxide primer. This is matt and would be good for 'weathered' stock but as Max says, if you want a 'new out of the paintshop' look then a spray with a satin finish would do the trick
 
Colo Rail Annual 25 says a 50/50 mix of tuscan red and caboose red for pre 1912. with a minerrl brown roof & trucks (= dark brown).

For the coach red a dark red oxide is fairly close - Jack Thompson has a freelance railroad and say his color is 'Pennsy Maroon' (Tuscan Red) so the DRG red would be a bit lighter.

the last one less so.

A final thought is to take the coach you want to match to a car paint mixer who should be able to match it for you; ensure it is acrylic paint and can be painted onto plastic.

Helpful, up to a point; don't know if it's my monitor but the shade of Thompson's stock "on screen" looks more like a purplish-brown than the red I've seen elsewhere. (I've got Olympus and Canon blaming each other for my sudden inability to print my pix in the shades as they appear on screen, despite using the correct paper, ink & printer settings...) I've also used Halford's primer on some freight vehicles, so to prevent a certain sameness, I might stick to a different green from the Bachmann plastic. Pity Testors are stopping production, according to what I read. Their name has been synonymous with US model paint for a long time. Loved the passengers. tho'.
