Crushing coal

This may well be a stupid question, but many of us use real crushed coal for wagon loads, coaling stages etc., so has anyone come up with a way of crushing up lumps of coal without bits of it flying all over the gaff?

I've tried putting a lump in a plastic bag and twotting it with Mr Lump, but all I end up with is a knackered placky bag and all the little pieces of coal that I need all over the floor .

Any tips?

Try a shovel and paving slab and instead of thumping it lots of slow rocking pressure.

Never tried it but but think this will be better than thumping it.

If you have lots you may need one of these

A cloth bag, pillow case, old hankerchief or something like that is better than a plastic bag.

That's how I do it Mel, Mr Lumphammer meets plastic bag. I use Anthersite coal which comes in small lumps anyway, just need to be a bit smaller. Me Saxon and Frank S both have real coal in there bunker/ tenders........

I refuse to answer on the grounds it might incriminate me and I plead the fifth amendment .

I go to my local 5 inch gauge live steamers and they have a bin of useless slack that all the tiny stuff from their locos gets chucked that they are happy to get rid of. looks like this.

I tend to wrap a old towel or sheet round the coal and smash it up with a hammer on the concrete floor in the garage . Have done this for all my locos and coal hoppers

A lot depends on the coal used.
It varies greatly.
Coal from The Zillertalbahn (Lignite or brown coal) is quite different to that on the Achenseebahn (which has the appearance of Anthracite) both of which start from the same station.
Some will chip easily into small lumps whilst others crumble to dust.

The coal leaves some nasty smears when I use the towel after a shower....

So basically all that I need is some sort of bag/sock whatever and one of these .............

The coal i use came from my dads 5" gauge steam loco i think he said it was welsh steam coal does break up very well in to small lumps and dust i tend to use PVA glue to stick it on .
