When we got our new car 2 1/2 years ago, it came with a wind-up torch in the tool kit. Oh, that's handy I thought, no need to worry about battery condition etc. if you have a problem. Then it occurred to me that a smaller version would be OK put into a building to provide lighting.

Today I found some RAC sponsored wind-up torch keyrings in Netto for 2 quid, so I bought a couple (there are always similar ones on ebay too).

It says on the packaging that a one minute wind (as in wynd, not wind Fred) will give ten minutes of light, but I've put them outside and they're still going strong after half an hour. Stand-by for the two winners of the most boring photos on the forum 2011 :D. Testing being carried out in Corris Cottage and the fire station.

I'm not for one minute suggesting that these little lights are anywhere near as good as proper wired lighting, but if you've got some out of the way buildings where hard wiring would be difficult, or if your fed-up of having to change batteries, these might be worth thinking about?
