Yesterday, before the rains swept in from the Atlantic, I decided to renew most of the ballast on the O&NFRR.
The original ballast was laid nearly five years ago but an amount of fine soil/loam had become lain beneath the surface chippings. A small amount of new ballast has been added from time to time to replace any lost (where does it go? :thinking
but the supplies from builders merchants and Focus DIY have varied in appearance and colour over time.
A clean sweep was necessary - well, the big railways do it all the time - the old ballast was completely removed (re-used on pathways) and new limestone chippings laid as replacement. The rain has served its use in so far as it has washed fine dust from the chippings. Sunday bodes to have more clement weather which means test coal trains can be run.
