Has anybody got any idea of the prototype locomotive that the Bachman 2-6-0 is based on?
Given its diminutive size compared with their other offerings, I'm guessing it was actually based on an industrial prototype.
I've started making some alterations & additions to mine after running it in "ex-box" condition for a number of years, so am curious to see any photos of the full size loco(s) for ideas.
 
I think it is a bit freelance. People reckon a Maui plantation 2-4-2 is about the closest you will find.

That's going back a bit........and I even contributed to it....
I used the search facility on here but it came up with loads of threads that didn't seem to include that one !

At least the Hawaiian aspect explains why it is a rather small model.

Mine cost me £75 donkeys years ago. She is now BPRC (which is my standard for smaller locos) and has a mylocosound card. Still a hard working and lovely little loco. Very much part of my fleet.

Word is that she might well run on the new club layout at a few exhibitions next year.
 
There is the shell of a very similar loco sitting outside the terminus of the WP&WR at Skagway, Alaska :nod::nod:

I took a lot of photos in Skagway, but it's the one thing I didn't take a piccy of because it was just a shell, but it struck me then that it looked quite similar in proportion to Bachmann's mining mogul - unfortunately, I sold mine a few years back :cry:

Bit older than the Bachmann one (1881) and different manufacturer (Brooks Loco Works)
 
A couple of photos of my Mining loco which has received some minor alterations and detailing, though some further details need to be added..

Main changes are the removal of the front cowcatcher/pilot assembly and addition of boards to increase the coal load.
I was able to remove the lettering from the cabside using very fine wet/dry paper without damaging the black plastic surface and the nameplate has now been fixed into the area inside the white lining.
Other detail changes are things like the addition of a (1:24 scale) crew, some coal (actually coloured vase filler), painting the cab roof grey and a number of other things that cannot be seen from the two photos!

I had one a few years ago. Loved the look but it's hauling capacity left something to be desired. In it's defense, there are two grades on my line that taxed the loco.

There was a widely circulated article on the web about how to add weight to this particular loco.

In reality, you don't need the article, just open her up, and glue weight in any little nook and cranny that you can find. I used epoxy resin and lead shot (or the modern substitute for lead shot) you can buy it by the bottle load at any Huntin' Shootin' and Fishin' shop in this country
 
Mine seems to manage 3, fairly heavy, scratchbuilt wooden bogie hopper cars (made from real wood!) that I picked up at a GSS show at Stafford a few years ago, plus a scratchbuilt 4-wheel brakevan, without any problems on my line - even when there are a couple of fairly steep rises between different parts of the main circuit.
As it is the mines shunting/trip loco, that fits in exactly with my requirements. No problem with the 4 (soon to be 5) scratchbuilt NSW coal hoppers & brake van that I built either.

I will agree that poor pulling power,but smart little loco,I stole the engineer figure for my bashed Otto,it was re lettered and numbered then has sat in the box ever since,2014 as I recall,must get round to finish it.It had problems with the sound,it used to "burp"probably an easy fix,cant remember if it takes a battery,if so was that flat?must check it out at some point.

Going back to the original question on the prototype I can confirm Cuban Sugar railways 1209 baldwin 25214 of 1905 is pretty close. This loco that lasted into the 1990s clearly at some time had received a local constructed cab. It's bell whistle and generator we're in different positions on the boiler but otherwise it's pretty close! My guess is that these were locos that were purchased pretty well to a basic standard (at the time design) for which there may have been variations given they were built to order
