I wonder if any one can help me out. I have a Bachmann Lyn locomotive that seems to have burnt out it's motor. I'm not sure how, it isn't very old and hasn't had much use. I have disconnected the motor from the motion and wheels, but it still grinds to a halt, and on the last test started smoking! Has anyone else had this problem? Also anybody know where to get a replacement? Bachmann UK haven't got any, and getting one from the US would probably cost more than a new locomotive
 
I suspect Bachmann U.S. would be your best bet, the unit is listed on their site at $63.00. You'd also need to budget for shipping and V.A.T.

Before doing anything please ensure you have the later version of the loco. The first version was very different and less reliable. One way to tell is by looking at the cranks and connecting rods. The early ones were thin pressed steel later models have more substantial cast metal.

If it's a recent one, it should be covered by Bachmann's guarantee. Over here anyway, if you have a Bachmann loco that fails, they will repair or replace. They did for me anyway. I sent in the failed unit, plus something like $35 and they sent a new one!
 
I bought the "old" version secondhand at the GSS show at Rugby a few years back - at £45, it seemed a bargain at that price (!).

It is, however, a bit of a b*****d as regrds running quality, and has "died" on a number of occasions, but, following dismantling and cleaning, it still functions, even if a scale speed of 90 mph is more to its liking...........

Bachmann parts have always been a bit iffy - sometimes you're lucky, sometimes not. I was lucky when the Connie tender bogie stretchers failed, but when I received a boxcar with a very badly damaged bogie, it had to go back to the vendor for replacement.

That boxcar will eventually add to the store of replacement parts that Bachammn Europe hold - but that is about all they seem to do - cannibalise damaged items for parts
 
Thanks for the help, I have heard that Bachmann can be a bit dodgy when it comes to supplying spares. My engine is a later one but nearly 4 years old, so unfortunately out of warranty, it'll probably be easier to buy a new one.

I have been fortunate when dealing with Bachmann.
I've had good service but I always check if they have the bits in stock before ordering.
The U.S, website shows the unit as available, so IMHO an email to confirm after the festivities may be one course of action.
You may also find the Southern "Lyn" difficult to obtain at a reasonable price in the U.K.
 
Bachmann use Pitman motors.

As ever, the matching difficulty will be the shaft diameter, and changing the worm over
 
The Bachmann spares service has been mentioned before in this thread. I have used it and had items shipped here from the US. Obviously the pound does not buy as much as it did, but if they list the part you need, I would certainly buy it from them.

The thing to understand about the Bachmann parts service is that it is miss-named. 'Bachmann parts left over from production runs and being sold off' explains it better. I have bought three consignments from them over the years - bits for the Thomas series and found them quick and helpful. I was able to pay online to start with, but more recently, I have had to send my card details over several e-mails, as online payments could no longer be accommodated.

If this was my loco, that is the route I would take. Whatever you do, I hope you can get the parts you need to breathe life back into it. Besides it looks like a full size Lyn will be running in 2017!

Cheers folks, I will look into the US website after the holiday, it's an expensive time of year at Martin Towers! Three birthdays and Christmas within a few weeks tend to lighten the wallet somewhat.☺
