Axel pump on Accucraft live steam Flying Scotsman

I have recently purchased a Accucraft G 1 live steam Flying Scotsman. This as a axel pump which circulates water from the tender when running, it is supposed to keep the boiler topped up with water. I cannot seem to get this to work correctly, it does circulate round and back into the tender but does not seem to replenish the boiler. any ideas how to correct this. i have tried slowing down the flow rate with the control valve in the cab but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are correct to adjust the by-pass valve in the cab. First, be sure you have the right valve, then close it fully and see if the water has stopped flowing back to the tender. If it hasn't there are two possibilities, first you still have the wrong valve, second it is not closing correctly and then it might just be faulty. Check that first and we'll go from there.

Ok, the next bit is the slightly tricky bit. The idea is that the by-pass should be set to the point where the water level in the boiler stays constant. A good place to be, but almost unachievable if you have a track with grades because it uses more to get up than to come down. So start from 'valve shut' and open a tiny touch at a time 'til you get as close to utopia as you can manage, then leave the valve alone, except maybe a tickle either way if required.

Thanks for your reply G-force1. I will try your recommended suggestion on my next steam up and run. I will inform you of the outcome. Thanks again.

No worries Graham. What I described is a lot easier on large locos i.e. 3.5"G and above.

Good luck.

Hi G-force1, further to my problem with the axel pump. I seem to have it sorted with your help although it is a bit trial and error. But with a bit of adjustment of the by-pass valve while running it does do its job. Thanks for the help. Graham

Glad you got there.

How about some piccies? Preferably pulling a load.

I am having a steam up on Saturday weather permitting. Will take some or video. I have only got a couple of cheap plank wagons at the moment. I have on order a rake of 4 x BR MK1 crimson & cream coaches but they will not be ready for me until December/January.
