AsorA Bahn

Had a bit of fun working on the railway this week, nothing major just minor details added.
IMG_20251127_160338843_HDR.jpg
A couple of low retaining walls to finish off the trackwork here. Also changed the myob (babies tears) that was struggling here for another ground cover that likes the full sun better.

IMG_20251126_174344107_HDR.jpg
Crossings in, they still need some weathering to blend them in and blend in the patches in the road. The short curb will have a crossing light on it one day.
The myob is thriving on this side of the rock wall.

IMG_20251127_160319356_HDR.jpg
Reworked the approach to the crossing by putting a nicer rock in and widening it, plus I fitted new foam retaining walls.
Still a little bit to do here before I move onto the station, which will be next.

IMG_20251127_124629806_HDR.jpg
Running a train to make sure the new crossings are ok.
Also checking clearances in the passing loops.
I had made them long enough for a 4 coach train plus 2 freight wagons.
Thinking about it a, 3 coach train and 2 freight wagons. Will be a better maximum train length for the railway, and better for the wallet too.
For a good few reasons, one of them being. I am not happy with the track geometry at the other end of the station and shortening the loops will fix that nicely.
Others being Arosa, Langwies and Chur stations can all be a bit shorter too then. Which will help to fit everything in later on.

A shot from my favorite chair as I had a nice cup of tea and watched todays train go round and round :). The shorter train still looks pretty good to me.

Excellent pictures Stewie. Your very hard work is paying off nicely.

That's a wonderful, pleasing landscape that you have created there. Sitting there with your favourite drink must be very rewarding after all the hard work.

Lovely bit of Switzerland you are creating there, next up must be some signs etc. Another helpful one would be ‘fouling point indicators’ some lines just use a small red rock, some a small length of red rail, others more complex like this one a real one I liberated from an old closed line in Germany. Mounted just before where 2 rails converg at a point but so the regular trains do not sideswipe each other. I find the so useful for accurate stopping of trains when you intend to pass another. You will probably notice them now when looking at pictures of the real thing. For some unaccountable reason we do not tend to use them in UK.image.jpg

Thanks Al, I sit out here after feeding the chooks (just down the yard) and have my morning cuppa. No trains running, just a very peaceful spot to sit and ponder. Working out which part I will start on next, sure is much easier and more fun than moving rocks, blocks, dirt and mixing cement or concrete.

Thanks Jon, good idea on the markers. There are so many details to add now, I think it will take years to get through. I will continue on with St Peters/Molinis station with the track mods then ballasting and platforms. After that I can have a crack at adding the catenary on this side, which I am really looking forward too.

It was too nice a day today to waste not working on the railway :).
IMG_20251128_190640554_HDR.jpg
Yesterday I lifted some of the track and moved the point back from under the tunnel. Also moved the inside loop out a bit so its parallel to the other track and I can now fit a platform between them. Two of the besser blocks had dropped 3mm so i fixed them while I had the track up.

IMG_20251128_193504504_HDR.jpg
The new maximum train length for the line, is 1 loco and 4 long and 1 short wagons or 3 long and 3 short wagons.
This should make it interesting to operate later on, trying to fit in the days various traffic.
Should make for lots of marshalling at either end of the line. The kind of work real railways try to keep to a minimum, but I am trying to maximize:D.

Thinking about maintenance of the center area after the catenary is installed.
I realized I would need a large flat clear area to step up onto that wouldn't get easily damaged.
As the way I do it now would be asking to trip over and smash the catenary when its in.
So I removed the gravel and installed some more blocks instead. level with the top of the rail.
The real station has a large tarmac area between the station building and siding too.
I also slightly adjusted the siding while I was at it, its now a tighter radius and is closer to the edge.

IMG_20251129_173413652_HDR.jpg
Station area trackwork all finished and secured, ready to start adding platforms and ballasting next.
I did a bit of moving plants around, I think it should look better with a bit more greenery in the corner near the crossing.
It doesn't look like I achieved much but, it sure took all day to do.:D
Doggo unable to be a pest, umm I mean help with the watering.

I always had lots of fun walking over the overhead, far too easy to catch the wires. I once saw Andy walking over the Ruschbahn overhead with his stonking great boots, he was not that steady on his feet in such a situation so I bared him from any such walking about. The wires that he damaged on the walk I saw him convinced him I was right, very rare for that to happen!

Another fortnight has come and gone. Made a bit of progress but its been a bit of 2 steps forward and 1 back.

IMG_20251203_100641373_HDR.jpg
I removed the rocks from around this conduit junction, as it was in the way. I cut the cap stone and made a new surround.

IMG_20251212_113330200_HDR.jpg
The junction will now be accessed from above. Instead of by sliding the capping stone out like all the other junctions.
Conveniently the prototype has a shed and small trees here. The shed will cover the hole.
I also cut a pocket for the neat little bonsai my wife got me for Xmas, perfect spot for it.

IMG_20251203_152357423_HDR.jpg
I made stencils to use in marking out the platforms, the were very fiddly to make and use. Pretty much a waste of time really.
Also all the besser blocks for the station building and forecourt had to be lifted again and set 10mm higher. :(

IMG_20251213_174802403_HDR_PORTRAIT.jpg
This wagon with a texta taped to it worked way better.

IMG_20251212_195122835_HDR.jpg
The foam cutter I made was invaluable in making the platforms.
I was able to rip the 30mm sheets down to 20mm to better model the low RhB platforms.
A paint brush bolted to the table worked great as a featherboard. :D
Allowing me to use both hands for feeding the long sheets through, a much cleaner cut achieved and easier too than my first attempts without it.
Any rough edges are easily and quickly sanded smooth.
The platforms being foam will let me use pins to position people on them.

IMG_20251212_113323777_HDR.jpg
Doggo keen for me to start the grinder again, so he can bark and carry on help:D

IMG_20251213_191751334_HDR.jpg
Platforms and fill pieces temporarily held in place with rocks.
They all will be painted and covered in the dust sieved out of the ballast, as will the besser blocks.
Everything will be glued down with liquid nails.
The station area is starting to take shape, the greenery is filling in nicely here too.
I should be able to get the platforms and the ballasting finished here in the next fortnight.
Next on the list after that will be the tunnel at the end of the station.

I hope everyone has had a very Merry Christmas, another 2 weeks have slipped by.
I have made some decent progress for the time of year, also was good to not have redo anything this fortnight.

Gluing the foam platforms in with liquid nails.

The platform edges are finished, just about to start on the top surfaces.

A nice warm day, the glue is drying nicely.

The taped off part is for the station building.

Platform tops and forecourt all done with the dust sieved out of the ballast.
Speaking of which, I have run out of ballast now, It really didn't go very far at all. I thought I had way too much :D .
Next time I am at the landscape suppliers I will grab another bucket of crusher dust.
In the meantime I have the 2 crossings and the infill for the siding to finish, they are all cut to shape.
Plus the last section of platform is cut and just needs finishing and gluing in place.
.

That's all mellowing very well - looking forward to seeing progress in 2026.

Thankyou even thou this project has had to have a 90% reduction in budget for the last few months and probably the whole of next year at least.
Its not all doom and gloom, next year should be pretty productive. There is heaps to do that doesn't cost much money or I have already bought the bits for. So I am looking forward to it, there's even a extension which I have broken ground on :) .
So no new locos, coaches or wagons but plenty of fun things to keep busy with.

Well its a new year and may I wish everyone a Happy New Year.

I have changed the line name to the AsorA Bahn, I think it fits the theme much better.
As its based on the Arosa line, but nearly everything is backwards or wrong :)

What better way to start the year, than running a train.

The cable junction spaces make for very convenient spaces for important stuff.
Unfortunately I will have to shift the bonsai from here, as much as i like it there. That will need to be a place to stand when the catenary is in, to access the center area.

IMG_20260101_104607193_HDR.jpg
Its amazing how fast the spiders rebuild there webs, I ran a train yesterday.

The troll is last years birthday present from my wife I think he fits the mountain theme well.
Seeing they have them in Norway surely some must of made it over to Switzerland:D.

Some shots from todays fun.

Operation is limited to the sidings at St Peter/Molinis and Arosa concrete plant. Something I am keen to expand on.
So as I already have the blocks needed to expand Langwies station.
I think they will be much more useful being redirected as a retaining wall to make a flat space for the expansion of Arosa station.
I will get to Langwies expansion some time in the future, probably a few years away and it can stay as a through station with no sidings or loop for now.
IMG_20260101_111558382_HDR.jpg
Still a bit more to dig out yet, lucky Doggo he will get a prime view of Arosa station from his little spy hut.
The station area will be1.2m wide and 7.5 meters long in total.
I will have to go through the cuttings i started and see what I can plant on and move the mini shade shelter somewhere else.
Work will start on the wall next week, but the station will be a few months away. Too much more important work to do first.

This will give me the ability to operate a very limited service between Chur and Arosa.
I have less than a quarter of the stock needed to run a full service and that's not going to change this year, but I do have enough to get something fun happening.
