Am I using the right kind of vinegar?

Yeah, but they are their own private hell in some cases... getting them in right, and the right length... sealing spark plugs is tricky, get a little leak and you can burn away a lot of metal... not exactly the thing a poor young student needs, buying new heads for his motorcycle :(

The quality of Ali for these things seems a lot better these days, perhaps they learned a thing or two at our expense? :wondering:

My track had been in the garden for 10 years. I’m now building a layout indoors, hence I needed to clean the track. I washed it in household detergent then rinsed with plenty of water. But (perhaps helpful to you) I needed the rail ends really clean so they would conduct electricity (I use Hillman rail clamps). I smeared a bit of HP Sauce on the rail ends and left them overnight. The next day I used a old toothbrush and water to scrub the rail ends - they came up nice and clean. Rinsed them well afterwards. It worked.

During the Alisa Era of the Isle of Man Railway they used brown sauce to clean the big brass domes. Apparently worked quite well but people did complain about the pervading smell of brown sauce whenever a Train went past!
