Couple of things I noticed, though. There are supposed to be a pair of handrails, one for each set of steps down at the front of the locomotive. The handrails were in the bag of parts. There were no holes drilled for the handrails to go into.

Also, the wheel sets for the tender were laying in the bottom of the box when I unpacked it. I put them back together with no apparent problems.

Hey,

congratulations on your first G scale loco, good choice !!!!

Best regards
Soeren

If it picks up power on all 8 tender wheels as well as the loco, should be a good runner.... it looks like it has the same type of combined coupling/power connector between the loco and tender that the Piko BR24 "Steppenpferd" uses.....

Hope you enjoy it!

Jon.

Actually, the multi-pin connector/coupling may also be for all the necessary wiring connections for DCC - I assume that a decoder, if fitted, would go in the tender?

Jon.

It has wires down to the rear truck on the tender which I assume is for the detection of track magnets. Other than that it does not appear that the tender picks up any power from the track.

Power is not picked up from any of the tender wheels. The analogue circuit board is located inside the tender, and can be replaced by a DCC decoder with a loudspeaker. Track magnet detector also goes between one of the tender trucks.

About the hand rails, your loco does not need them. Some 0-6-0's & Mogul locomotives have a slightly longer front buffer area (e.g. #38210), only those require the handrails installed. Google a few images, you'll notice the differences.

This model, #38216, has a loudspeaker in the tender. Piko says it'll run on either DC or DCC.

As noted above by WillemD; just to clarify, out of the box (stock) it will run on a DC powered track....for DCC you'll need to upgrade it with a DCC decoder.

Either way, congratulations on your first loco...an excellent choice :)

Talked to the folks I bought the loco from. They say it doles not need a separate control decoder to use it with a DCC system. They say the decoder in it does sound, lights, smoke, and control.

Correct, yours is DC/DCC with sound equipped. Some of the other Mogul type locomotives are DC only, which is why I mentioned the analogue circuit board in my post. That might have been confusing in hindsight.

No problem and I stand corrected, thanks for the update.

Also, I see this Loco on a few dealer sites at an amazingly low price for both DC and DCC capability....I may just have to grab one :)
