Yet another Otto bash

Part 10 - Bits and bobs

I think she's now ready for the primer.......

The spectacle plate has now had its beading applied (1.8mm half-round brass wire) and rings around the spectacles themselves (2mm brass wire, soldered on and then filed flat). Of course, my 75W soldering iron decided to pack up and so had to do it with my 50W iron which made soldering on to the plate a bit more interesting ...... (a ten @$&#$£-it per minute job as opposed to the more usual five @$&#$£-it per minute job!)

The safety valve was cobbled together from some scraps of brass tube, a self-tapping screw and some brass shim - mounted on the inverted bottom of the old chimney. Not yet fixed into place as I want to paint it separately before installing it into place.
file.php

I've replaced the Otto chunky chimney with something a bit slimmer. Decided not to go for the cut-down chimney which No.3 has - which was a replacement to its earlier taller chimney. Mine owes its origins to a felt tip pen tube and some brass wire soldered to a strip of brass and filed into a collar. Will have to paint it brass colour as there's too much solder visible for it to be polished-up.
file.php

The tank filler is, as you'd expect, a bit of plastic pen barrel plus a few bits of plasticard, some Cambrian rivet heads and a small piece of brass rod. Hopefully will look more realistic once it's had a couple of coats of paint.
file.php

The firebox door has been hinged with a piece of brass rod, so I'll be able to adjust the volume of the sound card by opening and closing the door

She's now taking shape. I'll make the sandboxes and spray them separately, as they will be fixed to the running plate.
file.php

After a couple of coats of Halfords rattle can grey primer, I'll be able to do some rubbing down and probably a bit more filling, and a bit more rubbing down.
file.php

And then, should be able to apply a few more rivets.
file.php

Then she'll be ready for her final coat - before I start adding the final details like pipework etc.

Lots more done there, Rik..

I can never see past the 'mess' of bits and odd colours.. I only seem to 'get it' once it has a unifying coat of primer applied. :(:shake::rolleyes:

It's amazing how the primer pulls it all together (and highlights the imperfections).

With the black figure it reminds me of some locos in museums.

He also supplies some additional weight, being whitemetal. I might replace him with another driver with arms in a different position so he looks more natural when I swivel him for reverse driving.

Part 11 - Works Grey
Well, she's getting closer to completion. A few shots of her in Works Grey.

A few more details have been added since the last set of photos - the stays on the front of the spectacle plate, a couple of sand boxes at the front, sandboxes incorporated into the bunkers, handrails and a few more rivets.
file.php

There's still a little bit more filling and sanding to be done in places. Close-up photos can be very revealing ....
file.php

The safety valve has still not been permanently fitted as it will be easier to paint off the model
file.php

And then, there's a fair amount of pipework which will have to be added once she's in her final livery.
file.php

So, not quite there yet, but well on the way ......

Absolutely brilliant.

Rik - absolutely blooming marvellous job and looks a perfect fit for you line. Can only stand back and smile. My own Otto low cab attempt is still sitting on shelf following appointment of a smoke stack and some brass work. Have run a few times in past week but haven't had opportunity to do detailing. Just motivated me to get back to it.

Thanks folks. Just trying to decide if the spectacle plate needs to be raised a few mm - comparing my model with the original it looks a bit low. It would be a major job, so may just live with it.

No one would have thought so, until you mentioned it! It looks fine

Part 12 - Emerging from the paint shop
Her first outing from the paintshop.
file.php

I decided the spectacle plate was too low and so raised it by around 8mm. It was a bit of an effort but I feel happier now that she looks a little more like the original - slightly ungainly and, as someone said, slightly Emett-like.
file.php

There is, of course, still plenty to do. The driver doesn't have any knobs to turn, levers to pull or gauges to tap.
file.php

..... and then there's a a fine array of copper pipework which needs to be arrayed over the boiler and running plate.
file.php

So, a couple more days' tweaking and I think she'll be ready to join the roster.

Mind you, she does look a bit too pristine and shiny for a working loco.................

WOW! :)

Part 12a (for the superstitious) - Final(?) detailing

Very nearly there......!!!
file.php

Most of the pipework has now been added. I've decided to omit some of the thinner oiling pipes which spider across the running board but quite pleased with the pipework around the safety valves and whistle. Slightly simplified from the original but looks OK.
file.php

As the cab interior is very much on view, I spent a while constructing the water level gauge from bits and pieces. It's slightly overscale, but I can live with that. The pressure gauge dial is a photo of a real gauge reduced in size.
file.php

Just given her a small test run and she seems to perform OK with all the gubbins on....
file.php

Just noticed that I need still need to install a brake standard and reversing lever in the cab. Slightly less space than on the real thing as the firebox is somewhat wider - but no doubt will find somewhere for them.
file.php

She needs a number on the bunker sides and buffer beams and I need to order some nameplates and makers plates from Narrow Planet - then give her a couple of final coats of varnish - then I think she'll be ready to roll!
