What happened at your workbench today?

I’ve just taken delivery of a new workbench for the Operation Cabin at the CFR. It comes flat packed so I will assemble it the next time I go to the CFR.

Almost David, mind you it will take two persons to put this thing together. In the past I have made do with all sorts of tables and stuff including a picnic table as a workbench. With the arrival of the new cabin I decided to bite the bullet and get a reasonable workbench.
I also invested in a new mat to go under the workbench:-

Most of the painting and staining done on the Zillertalbahn coaches - a lot of careful masking required. Just the balcony ends and seating g to do and couple of other little bits. Little trial fit of the main coach parts and inlays in the background. This is a peach of a kit with some stunning detail. Just hope I have the skills and patience to do them justice. Max

Paul, I have the same two items in my Garage, I did add a 25mm thick ply top to mine as I didn't consider the supplied top robust enough.

I have an off cut of melamine which is just the right size to cover the work surface.

White Melamine makes a great Worktop, relatively cheep and if it gets too bashed up over the years is easily replaced. Mine has been in place for 7-1/2 years now and is still very servicable.

Today is a bank holiday in the Netherlands so I took the opportunity to finally start on the coaches project. After a lot of drawing and calculating, the saw was powered and all main parts for the coaches are ready, except for the roofs.
This is enough for three coaches. 2mm plexiglass for the walls and 2mm base.

You don't.. It makes the glazing...

You then veneer the detail is Plasticard.. - Well That is how I have seen it done..

Actually I am going to use real wood. I have assembled lots of small planks which will get a teak color and these will be glued onto the plexiglass. Plexiglass is indeed only the glazing BUT also provides the overall structure.

I have used plexiglass for platforms and paint sticks to it quite well, though I tend to use cheepo black £1 shop rubbish and cover with silica sand, not quite what you would want for a coach side.

The new Control Cabin starts to feel ready for resumption of operations. The electrics have still to be installed, but I am getting there:-

David, it took two of us almost 4 hours to put the workbench together. The plans supplied were pretty basic and whilst all the main parts were there, there were a number of nuts, bolts and washers missing. Luckily I have boxes of the said items, but it was still a faf. However I’m very happy with the end product.

No need to Paul, the roof is insulated already and three of the walls are well sheltered. During the winter months a small oil radiator keeps the temperature nice and cosy.
