I've come up with a layout of buildings that I think works well .......... at least for now .

So I've been building various fences etc. here and there to make a series of back alleys and footpaths in between the buildings and the railway. Here are some pics;

Fantastic stuff Mel.

Brilliant - you come up with some great photo settings - love the Cambria down the alley.

That's one of the things I learnt from the Mk1 narrows mate. Looking at it was OK, but you couldn't get a camera into some places when you saw a potential nice photo.

Top drawer modelling again matey.

Apparently Stockers loves a Cambrai down the alley. Is that code for something.

Oh Yus!

Although I am yank through and through (well the layout is) I really like the British atmosphere that you have created. You could almost see Compo, Cleggy and Foggy leaning on the fence watching the trains pass by!

This is a Great thread and has been from the start, I love the attention to detail that you add to the layout Mel.

always inspiring!

Slightly larger fence though :rolf:

Thanks again Dave and Mike. Perhaps it would be Dai, Ianto and Owain Bach leaning on the fence .

The row of cottages is probably the building that most people associate with photos of the Welshpool Narrows, so I decided that I'd make a mock-up of these buildings before building them for real. I knew that I wasn't going to make an absolute scale model, but I wanted to get my representation to have the right "look".

So I went into town and bought some coloured artist's card and set about marking everything out and cutting when I was happy with the dimensions. The doors, windows and framing was drawn in with a black marker.

This is the front of the cottages accessed by a narrow alley which starts at the end of Stockers Row. I might have a slight land grab for the private sidings as there's room to move the walls back an inch or two. The cottages form quite a big building being nearly a metre long. I've never seen any pics of this side of the cottages, so it's completely made up.

This is the side that most people will have seen in photos of the railway. I've reduced the stone cottage on the end from 3 floors to 2 as it looks better balanced (good reason for making a mock-up). There will also be a brick extension on this end wall (kitchen?) and each cottage will have a wooden lean-to against the back walls. Reckon these are either wood stores or toilets?

You don't see many photo's from this end, although I have got a couple. The one thing that stands out to me is that everything looks too tidy and uncluttered, but that can be done when the finished building's in place.

All I have to do now is to decide on how I'm going to build the real model. I've got a few ideas, but that's for another time .................;)

Mel, I use my usual 3mm PVC, for my buildings, which as you know I get locally in 8'x4' sheets.

Steve found this link

I think it might be the same stuff but in smaller sizes which of course makes it much more expensive than the way I get it

Thought this might be helpful.
