First proper day of the school hols and today's passenger train ran to 12 axles requiring double heading from the WGLR's original locos.
Awaiting departure from Wetton with No.2 Michael Henry leading No.1 Nellie.

The last couple of days have been spent in building and positioning the baseboard for the town section. This baseboard is 5' x 3' and is made from thick marine ply (cost a small fortune) mounted on a frame of 4"x2" tanalised wood. As well as having "legs" the whole lot also rests in a bed of coarse gravel. It is then all covered in roofing felt. Walking on it is no problem when neccasary.
An interesting thing (well, almost ), I did price up the wood using cheaper materials and it came out at £40. However, I would then have to pay £10 for delivery. Going for the higher spec wood came to just over £50 (most of the cost being the marine ply), but this meant that delivery was free - so going for the higher spec was not only sensible, but also hardly any more expensive.

I've made life difficult for myself by putting the ungated level crossing on a bend ...... ah well. Elliott has been telling me about how he's made his roads from real tarmac (the stuff sold for patching drives etc.), so I'm off to have a look this evening. I seem to remember somebody who did the same on the old GSM and it looked brill.
On the far side of the track is Stockers Row (a Pendlebury Village Shop and Village Cottage joined together). I've had trouble finding one of my existing buildings to go on this side of the track that looks right, so the new plan is to get two more shops from Alan and make up another terrace exactly the same size.
In the background, you can see a gap in the wall that marks the entrance to the churchyard. A proper Lychgate is on the cards to fill it.
On the far side of the track is Stockers Row (a Pendlebury Village Shop and Village Cottage joined together). The front of the cottages will be accessed via a narrow alleyway (ginal?) running from the end of Stockers Row and along the rear of the factory sidings (the walls are temporary).
Where are the cottages coming from? Oh, I've gotta make them.

Thanks Dan. To be honest I don't really know as the new grass has only been down for about 6 weeks. However, I do have a small patch of Astro-Turf that has been down for 4 years and that is fine. The stuff that I use is all designed to be kept outdoors, in fact it's designed to take a lot more wear and tear as it's meant for sports pitch's etc.
I had the same stuff on the terrace of our café for 5 years, so that is some pretty intensive wear. If put in a sunless, damp corner it grows moss quite well, plus where the bird table was I got some plants growing on it. This is the stuff with drainage knobbles underneath, not the flat underneath as used by greengrocers etc. and it also comes in two qualities (mild use or heavy use) and speaking of heavy, a large area of it is very heavy :impatient:
