weathering on the newly motorised stockcars

Although this is a continuation of the thread under kitbashing, this section really belongs here.

Three stockcars now have motorblocks and are in need of a facelift or should I say face drop!

I wanted these three to have the well used appearance that a lot of the Rio grande narrow gauge stock cars had. They were very rarely repainted and certainly had the look of old age. Metalwork would be rusting, wood faded and stained, limewash (used to 'clean out' the cars after stock had been carried showing where it has washed out through the car side slats and then over the solebar etc

Pristine straight out of the box ready to be motorised. The Bachmann 1:29 stock car is hardly of the standard of an Accucraft 1:20.3 Stock car but it can be the basis for a good kitbash

Fully motorised, Name board and running number boards have been changed, decals made and applied and then rust applied crudely using powders in alcohol.

After using different powder washes and painted detail the whole lot is sealed with Testors Dullcoat ( I seem to get through this stuff at such a rate!

Hi Pete, Thanks for the kind comment. No they are one Bachmann stock bogie and metal wheels and one motorised bogie using the Aristo block and Bachmann truck sides, but no washers.

Hi Tony
Thanks for the comments mate
A business opo eh :bigsmile::bigsmile:....hmmmmmm....
It does take quite a time for each car as well as a lot of Testors Dullcoat! So cost input verses cost output might not be too favourable :(

Pop over some time and I can do some while you are here

I love weathered stuff - all mine will be weathered (hevvvenntyyooaaaalllleee) but great stuff Mike. Looks fantastic

Hi mike,

I really smiled when I saw the other post, a neat and creative way to solve a problem!

Just one suggestion, but please its really not a criticism as I like your weathering a lot! Just don't forget to paint the wheel faces as if you look back to the prototype photo you posted above, it's one of the most striking things about the car. Even when freight cars are new off the production line, the wheels and couplers always seem to have already weathered with rust and dirt! Even if people are too afraid to weather their stock, I at least urge them to paint the wheel faces to dull down the shine.

Excellent work and congratulations on a very neat idea! :)

PS: I hope the photo below shows what I'm talking about

Hi Gav
Many thanks for the ecouraging comments.
I usually do paint the faces of the wheels but the stock car ones got by due to the the fact that i did not want to paint the motor ones until I was satisfied that everything worked properly, the non motorised bogie had all of the plastic wheels replaced but they missed out on being painted.....thanks for pointing it out though as spoiling the ship for a 'apence worth of ...etc

Like your wethering very much too!

Here is a couple of shots of some of me other efforts
