Now this might not suit everyone, but I’ve found that when setting up a decoder in your engine, asking Google can come in very handy.
EG. type into Google CV settings for a (decoder make)
You’ll probably get a reply asking you what locomotive you are trying to fit this to, the make and model of decoder and the make and model of the operating system you are using to ‘program’ your settings into the decoder.
After you’ve given that information and got a reply back, type in, for example. ‘The engine steam sound starts before the loco moves’
Common with DCC sound.
After a few seconds, Google will give you an answer of which CV settings into to change.

IMPORTANT…READ THE CV SETTING NUMBER YOU ARE CHANGING AND WRITE IT DOWN BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE

If you’re not sure how to read the CV settings, simply ask Google and it will give you a step by step instruction on how to do it. The same with
if you’re not sure how to change the CV settings, ask Google for help. As it already knows what system you are using, it will respond with a step by step guide to changing CV numbers on your setup.

I’ve found it very helpful and a lot easier than thumbing through a usually very leafy manual.

Try it out and see what answers it gives. Ideal if you have your tablet or phone with you when you do this,

Hope it helps as it certainly did with me.

Cheers

Hi Martin - good advice, I’ve used Gemini & ChatGPT lots for all sorts of inquiries related to my Garden Railway - & found Gemini/Google best when needing specific technical sequencing. I’ve used it for setting up decoders, consists - speed matching locos, weathering, and even improving the sand/gravel base on my western townsite - saves so much time. Just be prepared to challenge its answers - they’re definitely not 100% eg I went round in circles changing CVs trying to match speeds on 2 different versions Bachmann G scale Climax locos using ChatGPT then decided to switch to Google & was done in 15mins

Yes, I’ve found that Google is definitely the best of the bunch.

Personally I have found that Google AI is good for general searching but when you get down into the weeds you need something better.
When it comes to coding I use Claude as it's less prone to make mistakes (I switched from ChatGPT) and use Gemini for my general run of the mill stuff.

I have been using ChatGPT and find it acceptable giving me satisfactory answers most of the time, some have been a bit but hey they are still all learning, when they stop learning that will be the time to start worrying cos ‘Judgment Day’ will not be far behind.
