Transformer Options - Mts 3 Setup

Hello to all

New to this forum site, and in need of some assistance.

I currently run 2 loco's, one with a Massoth XLS Sound Decoder, and the other a LGB 55021 Decoder.

I have a LGB 55006P Central Station & the LGB 55016P Controller

I am looking for a new power source (was considering a LGB 50110 - difficult to find these days)

With the 55006p only giving out a max 5 Amps (Specs) am I restricted to a transformer (240V) only producing 5/6 amps?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hullo and welcome to the forum Jason.

I would try to source a 50110 if you can, even though it may be difficult in the Southern hemisphere. You might find them in the UK or Europe on Ebay or via a model shop, although I guess postage could be an issue.

You could try to find a Transformer capable of a higher current rating, but your Central Station will still be 5/6A....

As Gizzy says, yes, you can use a higher amperage transformer. The central station will just use as much of it as it is able to.
Please note that the 50110 is AC output. Presumably the central station needs AC not DC.

It does seem that ppl in the UK/EU seem to sell more LGB items naturally, and postage is always an issue. In fact even my Massoth XLS decoder had some serious postage costs

It probably needs a mathematician to calculate, think of a number, double it, add you year of birth, multiply by the number of ppl it passes...and wolaah

Not too hard to find a price......

If you try here:

......from UK to Australia, assuming a parcel weight of not more than 2kg, lowest option via Interparcel (shipped by DPD) is about 27 quid - that's for a 2-5 day delivery time to Oz, collection from sender's home, fully trackable and includes £50 insurance (which you can increase if you wish, I think £100 cover is £2 extra) - not too bad, really..... might make buying Duncan's one a possibility after all?

By the way, welcome to the forum, Jason! :)

OK, 27 quid is approx $60 Australia, not to bad

I had someone mention to me that I should look at a laptop charger...now this looks interesting.
The LGB 50110 has an output of 20v with 6 amps.

I just checked a few laptop chargers, here is the ASUS charger, it too has 20v with 6 amps. Now has anyone tried this and if so is it as simple as cutting the wires, splitting them and connecting.

Before you buy something like the laptop charger, check carefully into the whole AC/DC thing as mentioned earlier in this thread - the LGB central station appears to need an AC input, the battery charger will almost certainly only output DC......

It's possible that it can be made to work somehow, but make sure before you buy one!

The LGB Central Station requires an AC Input The ASUS charger mentioned in#10 produces DC output and should not be used as a power source for the Central Station. The LGB50110 is the recommended power source.

You are 100% correct, they are all DC output, and the 55006 requires AC input. I do not want to wire up an inverter.

Jon,

In the 55006P Manual it actually states the following,

Hints:
- If you use an LGB power pack (DC)
and the loco does not run, reverse
the direction of the throttle or
reverse the polarity of the wiring
between transformer and Central
Station.
- You can use any LGB transformer
or power pack (with AC or DC output).
The track current is limited
electronically to 5 amps. If your
transformer supplies less than 5
amps, the output of your transformer
limits your track current.

So, the assumption is that the 55006 could take 20V 6amp DC according to the manual. There is also a suggestion that the old LGB Jumbo 50101 can be used and that has DC output, reconfirming the AC or DC input option.

OK, then in that case it does certainly look like an AC or DC supply would be fine, so maybe the laptop power supply would work after all! ;)

Looking on the back of my MTS3 setup, the input does have a AC symbol (~) above a DC style symbol (dashed line above solid line).

I have an LGB 55006P that I use very happily with a cheap transformer, made in China, about £12 off ebay, UK supplier, 24 Volt 5 Amp DC output.

18 months and no problems. Beats paying £80 to £100 for a used LGB transformer. If you can find one.

Thanks for that, good to know someone has had success with a DC output/input to the 55006. That was my biggest concern
