this first picture shows what will soon be a deck with Nannarbsville yard


the second picture shows what will the long 3% grade to get up from ground level to the deck



the third picture shows where the tunnel to front yard will go



the forth picture shows where tunnel will end and a short trestle will start


the fivth picture shows what will become Kramston Station


and the last picture shows the place where Kramston Brewers and the Reversing loop will be as well as the tunnel to the BNSF yard in Twin Peaks

How accessible will the tunnels be?

You will need access from either end, and /or from the top.
Make the clearances generous. - You can make things look tighter, with a portal / facade.
Try to approach and depart tunnels on the straight. - You can have a curve in the tunnel, but keep things gentle.
Try to avoid rail-joints (within the tunnel) as much as possible.

But mostly, have fun!

another thing is that we are adopting a dog right now and they are quite small so we need to keep them from squeezing throught the tunnel and into the front yard where there is no fence

Hm having heard a disturbing story from a friend who‘s Mum’s small dog escaped and got run over in the last day or so, may I suggest a fence on the front garden somewhere as well. Possibly your building mandate may not allow one at your boundary, but inside that you may be ok.

well there is a fence but it just seprates the front and backyards and there is a hole where the tunnel will go and we can't build another fence

if you are getting a dog, it might be better to consider an elevated layout, especially if you have a puppy, or a dog that likes to dig.

we can't do an elevated layout in the front and the backyard part will be raised about 1 foot hence the 3% grade

well as you can see we no room for a large helix and anyway we have ways of stopping the dog from wrecking the railroad

A water spray bottle will do fine or a firm no, at least my dogs respond to that, i am more worried about our cats that they will snuggle up with a pray in one of the tunnels
Dogs just bark when something starts moving out of nothing or they intend to play with it, one is even running away with his tail between his legs....60 kilo dog go figure that one out.
It would be very nice to see your puppy reacting on a moving train, cant wait to see or read the story.

Anyway as for your title to plan a bit, did you tried templot.
It is more for track builders but also very good for track planning.

Ah well yes, dogs and trains. See short video link below of our Milo - "the chocolate sproodle" .... I'm sure he was an engine driver in a previous life... Probably shouting that I'm wasting too much steam?.....
