Track laying like Nicolas Trudgian

I honestly think the epic engineering on Nicks railway is not essential for most garden layouts. and unless you go very deep everything will move anyway. Our recent extention had 7 foot deep footings! Yes He has the lay out i aspire too!!!

Our whole house is on 30ft pilings....clay on sand on side of a hill...long way down to bedrock!
As we have the soil that we do, as you say Ian, I would also have to go down a long way to keep my layout from having any 'movement'.

The other thing you might need to consider is if you ever move house. Unbelievable as it might seem, the majority of perspective buyers don't want a railway in their garden (fools!). If you've laid your track onto the ground within the flower beds, it's the work of a few hours to lift the track and return the former track bed to "normal" garden, but if you've concreted in dirty great big concrete lintels all over the garden, it might put people off.

I would use electrical cable tray if I was to mount a railway on posts?

Lightweight and glavanised, it comes in various widths, suitable for single or double track, and you can get corner pieces for curves.

Easily cut with a hacksaw, or angle grinder, it has holes for screw fixings, or drainage. You might be able to find it in skips if a building is being refurbished....

Regarding the recycled plastic lumber/decking, it still warps in temperature changes. I know, I've got some that I used for platforms. It still requires some form of frame, but takes screws wonderfully and won't rot. I'm going to re-lay my line on electrical conduit tray as Gizzy recommends above, 150mm wide and just over a tenner for 3 metres. I'm also going to place some weed blanket strips in the bottom and then ballast the track. Theoretically it should need no maintenance.
Edit, Filcris products not tried by myself.
