Long shot for Ian as it (just) includes the Rosella that lives in the aviary - his backside is right at the top of the picture .

You've a Rosella in the hanger?

What kind of aircraft is that....

Built the Maintenance Unit warehouse today. Nothing much more than a piece of Corex board cut to shape and stapled to the framework behind with an awning and doors glued on. It actually looks more effective in real life than it does in the photos.

So simple, so effective. Well done.

Giles

Mel... that warehouse/ stores thingy looks a tad "flat" to me- how about copying Mr Holt's idea from his engine shed build and coating it in some form of sand/ paint mix? Would give it a bit more relief. I think such a large area of camo would look a bit odd too, reckon a sort of neutral greyey- beigey colour could look better. The size and shape of the building is spot on though

The new warehouse looks spot-on Mel; a really imaginative piece of modelling

I take your point Matt, yes it does look a bit flat. Having said that, there's a massive ex RAF MU near us (about 6 different sites, all civvy industrial estates now) and it's those buildings that I'm basing it on (they catch fire from time to time, so I know them fairly well ). Being rendered wouldn't look right and niether would that colour scheme. It would be fine for the buildings as they are now, but not when they were still under control of the RAF/MOD.

I have got a bit of a plan to add a bit more relief in the future by doing some more detail around the roof area, the doors and drainpipes etc. Always being aware of course that it has to stand up to being outdoors.

That's an effective bit of kit you have built there Mel, nicely done too

Fair point Mel, you are right of course- wouldn't look nearly military enough if you did that...

I might give it a go though, haven't thought about making buildings out of that stuff, s' a good idea.

Obviously, the new RAF depot. needed some airmen, but I couldn't find anything I liked. So I had a rummage around in my stock of figures and selected these 3. 2 of them are the cheapo Chinese Preiser copys, the other one is from Model Citizens (ironically I think his name's Mel).

They had to undergo some pretty drastic surgery to the top of the head area (red indian scalping ) before applying Milliput to make their berets, collars and ties, epaulettes etc.

A new coat of paint and voilla ................... an SAC, a Corporal and a Sargeant.

Sarge's storeman's coat came out the wrong colour and will get a re-paint.

"In action" on the layout.

I'm on the look-out for a Preiser Alsation now so I can make an RAF Police dog handler.

Thanks Mike . Went into town this morning and got the green paint for the camouflage. It's a bit lighter than I intended, but I am going for an old, faded look..................... and also for the building .

It still ain't pretty, but I hope it looks a bit more military.

The only thing is ..................... now I've camouflaged it ..................... I can't find it .

yb281 Feb 27 2009, 03:01 PM
