Sorry Z mate, but Giz and Paul are right, it will be weathered, but not too OTT I hope. I've got my Francois Verlinden books out (he's a Belgian guy who does some fantastic paint jobs on model tanks and aircraft) and I'm trying to replicate the sort of stuff he makes. Hopefully, it'll make the yellow colour scheme look a bit less "flat".

Anyhoo, having found this excellent website;

http://www.yellow-things.co.uk/main.htm

I noticed that a lot of British track maintenance vehicles have white hand-rails, so I've painted mine.

yb281 Sep 23 2009, 08:04 PM

The track cleaner has 2 flashing lights on the cab roof which operate in "track cleaning mode". These lights are clear which doesn't look right to me, so I've painted the lenses orange. They've come out yellow in this indoor shot, but they really are as orange as the driver's jacket.

I've started doing the "Verlinden" stuff tonight ........... and it's mind numbing . Still, it's coming along nicely and I'll take some more pics (outdoors) tomorrow.

I've got a few spare loco crew (from Llanfair), but seeing how this was a per way piece of kit, my attention was drawn to my Bachmann workmen .

Great looking shot Mel Those workmen look so real

So this Verlinden method ........... it's all about adding dark shadows to the inset pieces of bodywork like panel lines and louvres etc. This involves painting in such lines with a good quality small brush and some well thinned paint (good old Tamiya NATO black in this case). As I said, it's mind numbing, but well worth the effort IMO.

Here's a "before" picture ...............

............ and after. LGB's engineers did a fantastic job with all the panelling on this loco and this technique really shows it off to good effect.

If the model was a darker colour (like a tank), you would also do the highlights by dry brushing, but with something this YELLOW!! it isn't really neccasary.

yb281 Sep 24 2009, 03:51 PM

I've just run the track cleaner for the first time since painting the flashing lights orange and they look much better. Even if you don't want to weather your track cleaner, I'd recommend doing this.

I've still got all the panels on one side to do and then it'll be time to tackle the chassis/running gear.
