Well, having finished doing all the shading, I've just spent half an hour with the airbrush. The good news Z mate, is that there is still SOME yellow left .

Pics tomorrow .

Very neat Mel - looks really good. As an aside - have you tried using Games Workshop inks for weathering?

No mate can't say that I have. I've got some weathering powders to try sometime too, but I've got a bit hooked on these Tamiya acrylics which I find so easy to use with the airbrush. I'm not a great fan of them when brushed on (I know Bruce has had probs with them too), but they worked pretty well for doing this shading.

It's certainly something I'll have a try with sometime though, thanks.

I have had a problem with acrylics when brushing, I thought it was just me - I will now try another paint and see how I get on

I tend to usually use enamels for brushing Bram.

I tried not to go too grotty, just concentrating on the chassis area with the pics from the website as a guide.

............ and after. LGB's engineers did a fantastic job with all the panelling on this loco and this technique really shows it off to good effect..

An example of how the shading technique works. I really like the hinges on the bonnet panels. Flooded with really diluted paint and immediatley wiped off, leaving the paint in the detail.

yb281 Sep 25 2009, 10:21 AM

Hopefully I've left enough yellow to satisfy Z mate .

Thats brilliant Mel, really looks like something the permanent way department use and abuse, a very workman like loco. That weathering technique is very effective.

I'd just like to dedicate this thread to Jason and G Scale Mad, without them non of this would probably have happened.

A brilliant thread from GSM Mel. I have thoroughly enjoyed rebuilding it here. I could have done it in half the time but I kept stopping to read it and view the excellant pictures.
Forward with GSC. I look forward to seeing the future here. :D

The thread is now unlocked.

Thanks Alan for rebuilding it here (the 6 million dollar thread?)
I,too, have enjoyed reading it again. I tried to save it and a few other of Mel's threads but the pictures didn't come with them (was so dispirited at the time, I didn't try again) so to see this is a real bonus :D

I'd just like to send my sincere thanks to Stockers for resurrecting this thread .......... so many happy memories.

Unfortunately, personal and family issues have meant that trains haven't been a priority for several weeks - I can't remember the last time I actually ran a train. However, I have been keeping in touch with some ex Madders and having the occasional browse through GSC. Seeing this thread again has made me even more impatient for Spring to arrive.

In the meantime ........ the WGLR might just be appearing in a newsagent's near you. Better not say any more, but Tag might have further details ........... D'OH!!!

Thanks again for all your time and effort Alan.

:D Hi Mel, hope things are going OK.

Here's a pic for those who haven't quite seen enough of Mel's great line..... :applause:

I've really enjoyed spending the last hour or so reading through this thread.
What a fantastic layout

Woke up this morning to a smattering of snow. Nowhere near as much as other people have suffered, but nicely in scale.
