Today on the WGLR

The job of the fireman is to save life, protect property and RENDER HUMANITARIAN SERVICES said Eyre Massey Shaw, Chief Fire Officer of London from 1861 to 1891. Still applies today (although some of the politicians, Warwickshire Police and the CPS could do with being reminded of that). Reckon the last one covers this occasion mate. ;);)

Good bloke old Massey Shaw .............. went to school with Fred. :rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

...and some times animal-itarian ones. Wife called them out one night at about 2300 to rescue an injured cat which had secreted itself in a storm drain and was unreachable (I was overseas of course). They did it promptly, efficiently and cheerfully; at the end when being thanked one of them said "beats attending major MVAs every time, Missus" and I guess I can understand that. Needless to say we've been significant contributors to their fund raisings since.

The firemen customs look just the job, as does the security fencing and gates - all very nicely done. Bruder make some construction fencing (1/16th scale) which might also be suitable base for something like this.

You need some aircraft junk in that yard Mel some old wings or fusalage bit's off to the scrappy.

Absolutely right Paul. If anyone has any bits left over / part finished / redundant 1/24th aircraft kits I'd be very interested. They'd make interesting loads for flat wagons too.

I think I can see where this is heading

Today the former identity of the industrial style building in Wetton yard was revealed. :bigsmile
Oooh nice.
Looks a bit like a small version of Timothy Hackworth's Soho works at Shildon.
Cheers Neil. The fact that I had to look it up with a google search shows that this is quite a coincidence - Alison's father was born in Shildon.

Love the new gates Mel, I have been thinking about using that stuff for sugar cane ?Whole Stick Bins? for some time, problem is, all I do is think about it. You DO it. Great Stuff.

If you could put pins in the bottom of the stiles the gates could swing like lock gates in holes in the LGB paving. It could help with stability as well as taking some of the load.

Hi mate I have had a cursory look for the lysander and can't find it. I last saw it before our extension build so am perplexed where it is. I will look in the loft tomorrow.

OK mate, thanks. Don't bust a gut though, I can have a re-think if neccassary.

And with regard to the previous posting, security has been arranged for when the gates are open ready to receive a train. You wouldn't want to mess with Corporal Dennis, let alone his dog Sabre (3 million bonus points for anyone who gets that one).:bigsmile:
Dog or no dog, Cpl Dennis needs to be armed if it's an MoD yard. Our highly repsceted boys in blue may go about their duties unarmed (by and large) but in the forces nobody does stag with just baseball bats any more

Just read through the last month or so's postings Mel and its amazing what you've done. It's really good work, the tramway section looks just right!
(mind you, Dennis and Sabre will have to move before the train arrives:nail: )

Well, the new tramway section really came into it's own today. The weather may be rubbish for running trains, but it's fantastic for plant and weed growth to the point where I'd have to spend half an hour pruning stuff if I wanted to run on the main railway. But to just run around the Wetton loop and tramway takes next to no preparation at all (especially with battery power). As a result, I managed to run a tram service in between periods of drizzle.

I was a bit concerned that the end of the castle wall extension was a bit abrupt and wanted something to finish it off a bit better (and to provide a scenic break where the road disappears around the bend). I was looking through some photos of the Wantage Tramway and came across the level crossing near "The Elms" where there was a big advertising hoarding. So I bought a small (8" x 6") metal sign off ebay - found a fantastic dealer, loads of signs available, decent prices, cheap postage, ordered Sunday night, arrived Tuesday morning - Very highly recommended. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ALL-THE-RIGHT-SIGNS?_rdc=1 . I built a frame work from some of the plastic chop sticks left over from the MOD fencing and some stripwood Araldited to the back of the sign and today I was able to "plant" it.

I have found that some of these smaller signs fade over time, but this one is in a position where it will never be in direct sunlight and if it does need refreshing (or I fancy a change), I'll just buy another sign and Araldite it to the front.

When I'm running in modern image - preserved railway mode (post 1965), the scenario is that the tramway and the RAF base have been closed, but both the RAF siding and the tramway loop have been left in situ to provide the WGLR with extra storage - usually by the per way dept. Here one of the tramway loops is being used for a ballast train which can be loaded from lorries parked on the adjacent roadway.

You may also notice that I've filled in the far corner with some fencing, a few rocks and a couple of Box trees. At least these have been well watered in. :@

That grass is growing well Mel with all this wet stuff, it will soon be over the tracks:rolf::rolf::rolf:

Aha. A hopper-based extension with an imaginary history. My work here is done!

Loving the tramway Mel.
