Things to do with an 0-4-0 playmobile chassis

better source of Gel batteries is your local electrical wholesaler

Places like, edmunsons, newey & eyre, City electrical, etc

use them all the time for fire alarms and similar

much better prices than maplins

Or blag them off of the fire alarm service engineer. Second hand but perfectly good,

Here is Little River RR Motor Car #1 made from the Children's 0-4-0 playmobil chassis after they left the nest.

wow, yet another amazing variation using the 040 chassis. i like the wheel customisation, the previous owner filled them in on mine as i think they were spoked originally but actually they look ok. nice job tom.... mart

thanx Soeren, and nice to see others scratch building great stuff like you have. kind regards, martin..

dan, i do not have any control over the speed at the moment, only the on / off switch. it trundles around so slowly its no problem to catch and stop. i do not need it to do any real shunting, but of course it would be nice to vary the speed. i had the slide switches mounted in the bonnet but they looked so ugly i have taken them out so might put a toggle switch in the cab with an extension on it to act as a forward / reverse lever. thanx...martin

A simple way to control speed is via switching diodes in and out of the circuit.

Similar to this http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/satr/motor control.htm.

A simple multi turn switch like this can be use to vary the speed .

This one could give 4 speed levels http://www.jaycar.com.au/PRODUCTS/E...ches/Rotary/4-Pole-Sealed-PCB-Rotary/p/SR1216

I have used one and I disguised the shaft as an exhaust muffler.

Forgotten about this thread! Now bookmarked Greg's treatise on Diodes for controlling speed! Thanks for bringing it to the forefront again.

hi guys, the battery i use for my steam blower is the maplin 12V 1.3Ah SLAOrder Code: MM22Y and as you can see in the pic, it will fit this loco with room to spare. it can keep the blower running all afternoon so should run this loco for long enough. it does not say gel battery on the website, but i have been told thats what they are. they do them in different output powers, mine is the lowest at 1.3. the dimensions are on the spec page and i was told NOT to charge them from a car batt charger so i got the maplin one 12V Sealed Lead Acid Battery Charger 350mAProduct Code: LL30H. luckily i have a maplins in town so can peruse. also, they have increased in price since i bought mine about 4 yrs ago. i used one of these batts in a gauge1 hymek to pull six coaches no problem. would certainly buy again. found some nice dark green paint so may use that now i have finished sticking more bits of card all over it. ....martin

Superb uses of Playmobil Chassis here. My favourite being the Steam Tram, am just a Steam Tram nut.

Just a small warning about the Gel Batteries. I had one in my Merlin Motor Mule. Whilst it lasted for a long time and gave the beast plenty of Grunt and Long Runs. They do not like to be fully drained, in fact they need to be treated somewhat like a Car Battery and always kept in charged. Sometimes a bit of a problem for a numpty like me that tends to forget about such things in the Winter.

I am sure you all know what happens to a Car Battery once it has been run down a few times. K'd big time.
