Theme Carved Rock?

Saw a show on building the Everest Mountain at Disney World and showed how it was built with this themed carved rock. I was planning on adding several pallets of large stones, gravel and dirt to elevate my railroad to a second and third level. Before I go to that effort and expense has anyone dealt with this "artificial" version to add rock?

Basically they are made with a Wood Framework to support Chicken Wire and Fabric. Best is a cotton based one such as Dust Sheets. This is then covered in Concrete, pretty stiff mix of areound 3 or 4 parts Sand to one of Cement with some Waterproof PVA added. You can also add some Concrete Black Dye as obtained from Wicks. I further Coloour up using Sulphate of Iron, used to feed Azaleas so get it from a Garden Centre. It makes your Concrete go Rusty. Heed the warning about getting on your path though.

There have been other postings of the method n this forum too.

Much cheeper than Rocks, though the addition af a few Rocks can vary the effect.

When you say "Theme carved rocks", do you mean Pu Foam? I know this is used for stage scenery for both wood and stone simulation.
 
I spent the last 20 years of my career making fake rocks ( among other fake things). Mind you the coldwar was on and there was a great demand for them by both major protagonists... My preferred method was to make up a suitable "rock shape" using a light timber framework, bird mesh and fibreglass. Finished with coloured sand and gravel and depending on where they were to be used painted with yoghurt and dried moss then misted for a few weeks. None of mine were ever discovered unlike some of my competition.....
Some are still used by ornithologists.
 
There was a really interesting article in Garden Railways a few years ago by Bob Treat on casting rocks in concrete.

Not had a go myself as I have a ready supply of local red sandstone - but this method looks like an effective way of making your own rock faces.
