Thanks guys . You could really use just about anything as the core of the wall Paul as long as the tile grout would stick to it. With hindsight I may have used wood and sealed it with a good coat of PVA - I might still have to if this one doesn't stand up to being out year round?

Appropriately shaped tile would work, but how would you join lengths together? UPVC "planks" come to mind too, but it would be a suck it and see job?

sounds like an idea for some trials - I need some walling for the buildings' surrounds - I have some Cain Howley pieces which I've painted etc, but some custom made to measure ones would be good

Funnily enough Ian, I emailed the local archaeological trust last night to see if they had any further info on this part of Welshpool (like where the name Armada Cottages came from). So you never know? Failing that, maybe a letter in the local paper might come up with something? I'll let you know if I have any success. "

Well it's been a while (6 months), but I finally got a reply to my email about the Welshpool cottages today!! Apparently the archaeological trust's computer thought it was spam. They were very apologetic.

Anyway, it is now being actioned and passed on to someone who may be able to help. I'll let you know if / when anything comes back. Hopefully, it'll be within the next 6 months.
