Loose-lay on sand can be fine, but it does depend on your ground conditions. - Plus 'local' problems like tree-roots!

I am in Staffordshire, so on clay.. We get a lot of movement, depending on how wet the ground is.

I am guessing I will either have to go deep with supports, or live with fairly regular tamping and levelling sessions?
I'm on chalk so we don't get too much movement, but I'll have to watch out for roots from an apple tree

The boundary is straight but I wanted a bit more character than a long straight. Some gentle curves give a bit more interest I think.

The other thing you could have done is to lay a Conctete Gravel Board so that the Centre would be roughly over the moving bit. Your normal methods of ground work being used at both ends of the Board with perhaps a brick or two to get the levels OK. I did this for a friends line in Hemel where a stinking great tree’s roots were going to cause problems with the low walls that I built for him.

I am building on Wealden clay. It works for me - other than that one tree.
Keep it simple, we are building a model railway, not a mansion.

The offending tree. I will prune the right hand side to balance it a bit.

I think I would take out the whole of the large section coming off to the right..
That would give a more upright main stem, and you could then shape the rest later in the season..

That's what I was thinking Phil, but looking at it today, it is not healthy - I think the digger took out some of its roots. I'll wait and see but total replacement is looking likely.

I would be tempted to not replace it with a deciduous tree, leaves and sap on the line and all that. A nice evergreen Shrub that would grow to a goodly size but easily kept in shape would work fine.

The lawn mower crossing (the slabs) was already there - so it seemed a good idea at the time.

You must be running out of track again by now? Peterborough 16mm not too far away, perhaps you will need a gang of buyers to help make sure you get all the long straights at the Show?

A spare afternoon and a goodly bit more track bed prepared. In a small cutting at this location and leaves look like they may be a problem at times. Anyway - another 15ft prepared and laid.

Nearly there now - about 35 ft of elevated track to connect to the 'big bridge' to do.

The cutting and some leaves!
