Because of my astigmatism, I usually have to rotate images to square them up after I've taken photo's, so while I'm in "post production", I usually apply a few touches (I have 6 points on my artistic license

)
I like to try and portray the line in its three guises - pre, early and post preservation by the amount of "aging" on the photo's and filming, eg pre-preservation should appear sepia / B&W or grainy colour to represent "historical shots up to the early 1950's.
I use a free download called
PhotoScape, which, 'cos I'm pretty non-technical has some great filters and "one click" effects.
