I MAY have mentioned (a couple of hundred times) that I recently purchased a gauge 3/G64 pannier tank loco built from a GRS kit off ebay. I was really chuffed with the loco as it came, but the GWR green livery doesn't really fit in with the time line of my railway. Also, several parts of the loco (mostly around the running gear, brake gear etc.) had not been painted.
I always had in mind that the loco would be re-painted in BR black and pretty grotty. The latest edition of Steam World magazine includes a colour spread of just such pannier tanks including several from the 8750 class just like mine and this proved to be the ideal reference for what I had in mind. The loco had been painted quite well in a pretty matt green finish which I was happy would hold a new coat of paint, so it was brush painted in Humbrol matt black enamel (including the parts that hadn't been painted - painting the wheel rims in particular makes a BIG difference). I already had the excellent BR lion on wheel Fox Transfers left over from previous projects. After leaving the black to dry over night, it was airbrush time using Tamiya acrylics - NATO black, dark grey, a touch of rust red here and there and a quick pass with flat earth.
A couple of GRS tools were added to the rear hangers. A footplate hose was made from bell wire covered in heat shrink and stowed hanging out of the fireman's side of the cab as I've seen in several photos. The fireman comes from the George Turner range. I've still got to finish painting the driver.
There are several jobs still to do including adding glazing to the cab front windows, coaling up the bunker and fitting number plates which are on order. She will become 3782 which spent many years shedded at 84G Shrewsbury and would therefore be able to work on the Cambrian lines (serving the WGLR) and was also often sub-shedded at Ludlow to work the Tenbury line down to Bewdley.
