Does any one have details of the roof ( I've got all the published plans) I cannot understand the layout of all the equipment (presumably engine or electrical cooling) not sure if they are diesel electrical or diesel mechanical.
The vicinal had steam, diesel and electric. The autorails were introduced in the late thirties to expand passenger services over the ex steam lines. Later on, heavier more powerful vehicles were created to see off the last of the steam freight services.
A lot of the SNCV wasn't electrified. All apart from some very early diesel-electric prototypes the diesel trams were diesel mechanicals; Autorail (AR) - passenger tram hauling trailers and Autorail Tracteur (ART) - ballasted, for hauling freight trains. They looked pretty similar, and in body style were also similar to the four wheel electric trams. WJK Davies' The Light Railway Railcar in Western Europe has pictures including one pretty good shot of some very complicated roof gear.
