Smoke Oil

So I finally own a loco thats a smoker ! (i was all swiss electric before) but thought that a SBB Rack loco might be fun !


So what are peoples recommendations for smoke oil ! is it worth getting the LGB stuff

I use the Massoth stuff, which smokes quite well and doesn't smell horrific. When outdoors, I tend to use the SR24 stuff as it smokes more but it does have more of a bad smell I've found.

I have both the Seuthe and LGB fluids.

I brought the Seuthe from Smiths Models in Sheringham. James does mail order.

The LGB fluid was with a Saxon Meyer I brought later....

Yes seuthe and lgb/massoth. Especially for a single loco. A bottle should last a very long time.

However…….for those that use the smoke regularly, and plentifully, i have made a fluid from half bbq lighter fluid and half tiki torch fuel. It doesn’t harm the smoker.

I have used this for decades, on literally 100 of my locos, lgb, bachmann. Regular seuthes and massoth pulsed. It smokes well, but is strongly ‘scented’. Im certain it is, at best , somewhat toxic (have no idea compared to the blue massoth/lgb fluid). I use it primarily outside. Inside……as i wrote , its epic….

like the home made style, maybe put Citronella in it and ward off all the bugs at the same time !

price of the offical LGB stuff makes it feel more snake oil.

I've heard of some Forumites mixing Citronella Oil with LGB smoke fluid....

I don't have smokers in this scale but years ago when I had a fleet of Tri-ang OO locos we used Johnsons Baby Oil. More acceptable to the domestic authorities if the slightly scented version was used and vastly cheaper than the official stuff.

Seuthe have shut up shop, any stock of oil or the generator units will not last forever, what Piko and LGB will do when they cease to be available I don't know, New models use more sophisticated units but all the older models were designed around rebranded seuthe generators. The smaller scales seem to be using the less messy and smelly water based systems which can produce really good results.

It is better to use smoke generators to generate smoke..

Smaller loco's:
You will (roughly) half your runtime with a 5V Seuthe unit.

Bigger loco's:
Less of a problem (beefier batteries can be accommodated). Fan-driven pulsed smoke units can be accommodated. - Think Aristocraft / USA Trains.

If you use water atomiser units, then you can ignore the current they use.
But, most of these will either be 'DIY' installations, and water and electronics don't mix. - More-so, than oil-based smokers.

If there were more hours in the day, I might look at utilising the scale-scale commercial offerings.

I am using SR24 modellbahn oil.
For those who are interested: I have a simple tool to extract a specific number of cm3 oil out of the big bottle and put that amount in a controlled manner into the smoke generator of the loco. See attached pages from our book.

All of the Trainline45 steam locos that I've bought (all of which have pulsed smoke) have had a little plastic graduated pipette included, which makes it easy to add a measured amount of smoke oil.
