Small handset to substitute for 40mhz Fatuba TX

I have obtained an Accucraft Whitcombe diesel with 40mhz RC.
It has the Fatuba twin stick TX handset which I would like to swap for a small handset.
Two functions; direction and speed.

Is there one that would be a simple swap for the Fatuba and able to pair with the RX already in the loco?

I have noted the remote garage door handsets that can 'read' other TXs. They have a 100m range but I am not sure if they would work with the two functions.

Garage door controllers, and the like, are in a totally different part of the RF spectrum I am afraid.

Phil, the ones I have seen work on 40mhz spectrum, but is there another part of the signal that is not compatible?

You could of course repack the Futaba 2 stick Tx in a small jiffy box with 2 potentiometers. If you are happy with 90degrees movement you could use the existing ones just replacing the stick with the pots with knobs.... Can be very cheaply done....

well assuming you want proportional control the two push button Tx would give you that....

I have seen a four button garage (learning) remote.
Would it be able to have two buttons for forward and reverse and the two others to increase/decrease the speed?
OR would it just hit full speed like an on/off switch?

I think it would behave like a switch.... The 4 button programmable remotes I do not believe have the capacity for proportional control like the wireless dimmer switches that allow speed increase/decrease by pushing the button a number of times....
Going back to my original idea you could use just 1 potentiometer that has center off, left to reverse right forward although I have no idea how the Futaba is set up....
The potentiometer does give you "cruise control"....
It may be possible to do it but beyond my expertise, I just repackaged a 6ch TX in a box, though I did play around for quite a while with the wireless LED dimmers....

Most of the garage door remotes are 'coded' to the receiver. They dont sent a simple signal blip but a numerical signal that the receiver decodes.

Yes this is my belief too and its a rolling code so that another exact same door opener cant be used to open a door its not sposed to...
