Short wagons ?

Hi All,

Im looking at running poss 6 coal/ore wagons (2 sets of 3) together but not sure which ones to go for, looking for short dumpy ones (not side tippers) and the only ones I seem to find are ....

Bachmann wood/ore bogie wagons or Bachmanns Thomas the Tank coal wagons,

The Thomas the Tank wagons look very large in relation to the loco with large wheels, what do you think ?,

Also does anyone know the length of the Bachmann bogie wood/ore wagons please,

Have you looked at kits from Brandbright, IP Engineering etc?

As a happy customer I have found Bole Laser to b e quite good, if you phone the guy before ordering I have found he will mix n match the parts you want, I have purchased parts of his kits not listed in the parts section of his site.

For comparison Bachmann 4 axle Bogie Opens around 42mm, LGB standard length 2 axle opens around 32mm and LGB shorty 2 axle Toy Train opens around 26mm.

I'm sure JD meant cm and not mm.

For European wagons I'd go for the LGB 'shortie' wagons, often marketed as Toytrain and in green boxes but now days in red LGB ones.

For US, if you can find them, Hartland Wagon (HLW) did some shortish bogie vehicles and also some 2 axle wagons (kits). No longer in production unfortunately.

I've both makes from when I first started in G scale and I still run them. The LGB Toytrain ones are perfect for my portable layout Hardyard....

Bachmann bogie ore cars (20 footers) are 290 mm over the headstocks (if you can lay your hands on any, that is )

FWIW I did a little comparison of HGLW, IP and Brandbright wagons a few years ago and found the Brandbright one the best. So I bought ten kits. I am not sure if you can still get them though.




Alternately, if you dont want to be fiddling about with kits, Accucraft Wagons are nice too. Again, I dont know if they are still made, but you see em on Ebay.







OR how about Swift sixteen? A kit of about ten parts.

Many thanks for the suggestions,

It would be for poss 2 or 3 wagon sets of coal that's why I wanted short wagons to make them look a little better, As the Bachmann ore wagons are approx 29cm in length they may be the better ones to go for.

LGB shortie ore hoppers are about the same length as the toy train wagons


AMS Iron Mountain trucks are much smaller (body about 14cm) and have sprung axles


Hartland are also very small but have unsprung axles

Considering an LGB 4 wheel Grizzle Flats open wagon seems to sell for £60 - £80 each, I think £40 for a bogie hopper is reasonable.

I've surprised myself recently Rhino - had to make some space in the garage for my second motorbike. Located boxes of G scale I'm convinced I never bought.
