Ron's Railway

Nice sized shed and a good start with the layout. Is that a hole in the wall in the back corner, leading to a future outside extension?

Thanks for all the nice comments guys. The hole in the front end of the shed, the line was extended outside in a simple loop and came back in again at the same end thus making the bottom outer curve 3 feet further out. This caused a bit of a problem when the weather turned colder though. Ron has one of these electric scooters and the line ran above the scooter storage area. However as the weather turned cold Ron put his canopy on the scooter and it would not then fit under the railway:timeout:, so the outer portion came down again

It's really what this railway thing should be all about. This way you both benefit, an outdoor railway to share on nice days and an indoor layout for when the weather is bad

Like Paul says, I hope when I get (even) older there will be someone to share my railway with :nail:

Quite right Nigel, I can still get me G scale fix even when the weather is pants. It help carm me nerves......

Sorry Mathew, didn't get any photos of the OO gauge layout, but it did run on the dame base boards, so you can get an idea of the size.

Rik, Ron has made his shed a lot more secure now. So hopefully he won't get return visits

nice one steve, credit to0 you

steve
timing is everything
just when this fellow loses his wife and his world is unsteady and his things and privacy and comanionship all taken-
you give of yourself-

i am sure this is a comfort in so many ways to him

well done

Update
One of the thing that didn't look to right was the height of the boards from floor level. These were about 4 foot and whilst they may look good on a OO scale railway, they looked a bit too high for G scale. A visit to see Fred's Windy Bottom, towards the end of the year confirmed that Fred's railway inside his shed look about right in height and so the whole railway and boards where dropped to about 18 inch up from floor level.

Also by dropping the railway gave an option to go outside at a more acceptable height. The idea is to expand to outside when the weather picks up a bit. The back of the shed where the railway will come out. It will be about 3 feet high here when we break through.

Ron's taste in music is not what you would call my favorite.:laugh: Although (luckly) he's never played any whilst I've been there.

Afternoon Steve,

I was concerned when you first said that Ron's Railway had been lowered,
Thought that would mean more bending, which don't get any easier as time ticks on,
All became clear when outside pics posted.
Well done ,
Looks like you got a long to do list coming up

To get into the center of the circuits Ron has built a step each side of the boards a hand rail and has also strengthened the boards so that they can be stood on it that area.
The outer circuit line is the one that will eventually run outside and here is the junction to do that, trains will leave the shed on the left hand line and after running outside will return on the right hand rails, doing a circuit inside the shed before going out again. If the weathers iffy then trains can still run inside. At present there is no plans to take the inner loop outside,

Afternoon Trevor,
Yes Ron originally wanted to put the track direct onto the floor so that it didn't look too high in the garden, but I managed to talk him out of that for bending reasons etc. Ron does crack on with most of the work himself despite being 84 he is quite active and being alone (although he does visit his wife most afternoons) he has the time to do things. Its just his sight that lets him down at times.

good job steve, llooks like rons found a true gent in life

Popped up this morning for an hour. New scenic background has arrived, printed on thick paper each section is 5 feet long and two feet high. There are 8 sections which gives him 40 feet of background scenery. Im impressed........

The track plan has changed since the last post about a month ago. The double track in the shed is now going straight outside, round the garden a bit and then back in. 13 4 foot straights have been ordered today for this purpose, Ron has quite a few curves so that shouldn't be a problem. The line is to be built on 2 x 2 frame with deck boards on top covered in felt.
