Robins and railways

I've noticed on more than one garden railway video that there is the sound of a robin's birdsong in the background - and have been speculating on whether robins are closet garden railway trainspotters. I then remembered I've already posted a couple of videos of robins who pop up from time to time in our garden -

and

I have posted these videos on GSC (and GSM) but it was some time ago.

Just wondered if anyone else has a robin (or similar) trainspotter in their garden.

I have a pair of male Blackbirds that regularly have fights on or around my railway whilst there partners sit on opposing fences clucking excitedly ??? The railway was once visited by covey of Partridges which I thought was a marvellous occurrence until I realised they had eaten of all the buds from my Spring flowers ::)

I have Magpies that try to steal the overhead or anything they think will come in handy for their nests, blue is the colour preference.... They also swoop the dog and help themselves to her biscuits if any are left and they have her bluffed.... There are a pair of other insectivorous birds that fly around underneath and eat spiders which I like.... Little tiny things with fine pointy beaks about 75mm long, the birds not the beaks...

Al Johnson.... one of the best

I have wildlife city at my place.

I have a little wattle bird that tries to control the airspace around my Bottlebrushes and Grevilleas (these are Aust native plants that have vivid flowers full of nectar).

He dive bombs the moggy and has had ago at me as well. >:( >:(

I have king parrots and bower birds that part eat the grapes and plums then drop their scraps all over the rails, I am thinking of installing some form of anti bird artillery or Iron Dome type defence system. :( :(

Not to mention the kookaburras that steal sausages off the BBQ. :o :o

Ground attack is by the blue tongue lizards that steal the moggy's dry food even if it is inside and the door is left ajar and to use the track as a highway to get around or doze in the sun. :) :)

SWMBO has had a couple of screaming "Get that out of here now" sessions when they penetrate the inner sanctum. Evidently laughing is not permissible in that scenario. :-X :-X

But alas no Robins. ;) ;)

If you have Blue Toungues you wont have snakes, the 2 dont get along.... We had a red belly at the pond a year or so ago, dog was going off its brain Hyacinth was going off her brain, snake was coaxed toward the gap under the rear gate and it dissapeared.....

If you need a birdscarer, I do for magpies and wood pigeons. The magpies steal my 'passengers' and mini outdoor tables etc and the wood pigeons scatter everything and crap all over it - you could try something I found in Rotterdam a couple of months ago.
Whilst eating at a pavement restaurant we kept hearing exotic bird calls and hawk-like sounds at intervals. We learned that they were to scare away the pigeons. Elsewhere in the city they were a nuisance but there were none in the vicinity of the restaurant which used recorded predatory bird calls at intervals of around 10mins.
I am now looking to audition a golden eagle or just a sparrowhawk will do. There are some of the latter about but clearly not enough. :-[ :-[

:D Coincidently, in our papers today, was a story about a bloke (professional) rounding up a 2m long red belly. Snake catcher is now thinking of returning to NZ! (We don't have snakes, and only one breed of poisonous spider, which hardly anyone ever sees)

For a while we were plagued with jackdaws and magpies invading our bird feeders. Blooming nuisance! They wrecked everything and made a heck of a noise - and of course, the smaller birds kept well away. My missus read somewhere that if you hang a black sock up in a tree it scares away corvids - they think it's the corpse of one of their kind. I was very sceptical, but indulged her (it's always advisable, I find). It might be coincidence, but the jackdaws and magpies have not been back since..........

Rik
PS - Has no effect at all on the wood pigeons though

Ahhhh...maybe that is why so many pairs of socks become singles.................. :o

They fly tame hawks at the Calvert landfill site to deter the seagulls and various members of the crow family. After a short while it was noticeable that the crows and their near cousins ignored the hawks. Realised they were not hunting and not a threat. Eventually the seagulls caught on too. Now they've just got to watch out for the Red Kites. But then they are not hunters, just go after carrion. Got a lot of Jackdaws in my garden but they don't seem too interested in the little peeps. Just shove things around a bit. Max.

Try one of these, they will even repel MIL's, well since I got one my MIL has not been seen in my yard....
