Realigning cogs on split box chassis

I have bought an old Zillertal loco (2071D) with the old split gear box. It is very stiff & quite obvious that the gears need re-meshing correctly.
Anyone know of an easy way to do this without dismantling the complete gearbox. It just needs one axle moved one cog.
 
Mine has a hatch on the top of the chassis so you can remove the motor without dismantling the chassis.
You still have to get the body off but you'd have to do that anyway.
 
Yep, like David says - it's a relatively simple job on a U class. First off with the body, then remove the four sideways screws that retain the ventilated cover plate over the motor compartment. Remove the cover and you can carefully lift up the motor, disengaging both worms from the drive gears. Re-quarter the wheels as necessary, then lower the motor back, making sure the worms mesh with the gears without messing the quartering up again - if you do get it a tooth out at one end, just lift that end of the motor again and turn the gear one tooth. Replace the cover plate to secure the motor in place.

All done without having to dismantle or disturb any of the running gear or motion.

Thanks for your help. Job done & everything running free. Just need to find the screws on the floor to put the body back.
 
Interestingly, 0.8 amps @ 12v before, now down to 0.55 amps.
 
I'd say the amps difference is clear evidence that you've solved the problem then, Mike! :)

Still rather high though. Motor may be getting a little 'used'.
A new motor in a good chassis will only pull 0.1 or 0.2 amp, unless going flat out with a heavy load.

I have one of those too. It has been around the world a bit too. I think I am on motor number three (Since 1978) and had at least one set of replacement gears. I recently managed to secure a new replacement set of wheels for it from America, but am putting off fitting them.....

As I recall when the motor goes you get a really strong smell with those locos, although this is a distant memory for me as the loco gets a lot less use nowadays as it is one of many locos, instead of one of four or five!

Don't forget that loco has a 27:1 reduction instad of the 17;1 of the Stainz etc, so you are using more power to go the same speed and there are usually three bulbs lit instead of one, so that is an extra 100Ma to start with.
